When New Orleans was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, much damage took place within downtown Shreveport including loss or destructionof over seventy percent of its architectural features dating back to antebellum times including some very rare examples such as Commandery Hall dating back to 1800 which still stands today inside Interim Cultural Center adjacent thereto; extensive damage also resulted throughout most suburban areas hardest hit being Damage Control Zone around Broadway Street between Harrison Avenue & Canal Street where entire blocks are gone including several key business districts; many high end stores were totally destroyed or damaged beyond repair e such as Saks Fifth Avenue store whose roof collapsed killing thirteen people instantly followed closely thereafterby release into open air onto Crescent Drive below Shrewsbury Place mall creating massive pileup thereof resulting in closure forevermoreofthat venerable retail oasis thereby once again demonstrating just how devastating hurricanes can be especially when approached unprepared

The area was part of what is now Texas before France acquired it in 1763 as part of their Louisiana Purchase.
