He donated land to build an early cotton gin and built a wharf to loading cotton onto ships that sailed down river to New Orleans while also developing other businesses around town including salt works and brick making. By 1849, New Orleans had become one of America's major trade hubs with goods flowing into and out of Shreveportgate via canal through downtown streets near present day Canal Street/US 165/I-10 traffic congestion). It wasn't until 1859 when James Kenedy started construction on what is today Jackson Square - one of only two squares in downtown - that Shreveport began to achieve some measure of notoriety as a commercial center with residences (now mostly apartment buildings) dotting its landscape across four blocks bounded by Third Street (northwest), Broad Street (southwest), Mississippi Avenue (southeast), and State Street (southwest).
