Shreveport is a city located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 134,711 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Shreveport was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1779-1780. One theory holds that Captain Cook may have seen alligators during his trip upriver from Baton Rouge and thought they were an unusual animal because he had not seen any before. Shreveport began as a stop on stagecoach routes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans beginning in 1819. By 1831 Shreveport had become an independent town with its own government and post office. In 1836 Shreveport became the county seat of Ouachita Parish when that parish was created from parts of four other parishes: eastern Ascension Parish, west St Tammany Parish, north Lafourche Parish, and east Chalmette Parish. That year also saw the founding of Alexandria Municipal Airport by then-Mayor Acheson Harnett to serve as a secondary airport for Shreveport residents commuting to jobs in nearby Alexandria or Bossier City.[2][3] In 1865 John Crain founded what is now Trans World Airlines headquarters at 921 Drew Street (now home to Jardine Matheson which occupies one half block).[4] In 1967 Delta Air Lines founded DALCO Airlines at 1215 I-10 West near Southside Boulevard;[5][6] DALCO merged with American Airlines on September 11th 2001 to become America's second largest airline;[7][8] however Delta closed its doors within months due to low passenger traffic.[9][10] Amtrak acquired sole operating rights for passenger rail service through Dallas/Fort Worth Airport beginning May 15th 1984,[11][12][13] However Amtrak suspended service into downtown Dallas/Fort Worth two weeks later due to concerns about vandalism & security issues associated with passengers disembarking trains there;[14][15] these problems persisted until December 1995 when Amtrak reopened services using Terminal 5 (DALLAS) after protracted negotiations with local authorities over access control procedures

In 1886, Shreveport was made a municipaludiplomacy center for all of Louisiana under Mayor Jules Ferryman with its own mayoralty and City Council system In 1915, Shreveport won its first gold medal in track events at the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IAA) championships held at Tulane University in New Orleans In 1959, Mayor Huey Long authorised construction of what would become One Riverfront Plaza which included a new Municipal Auditorium and three blocks east along one riverfront block called "The Waterfront" also used for public uses such as swimming pools etc., now home to many local businesses including Foxwoods Casino
