Shreveport is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area and is located just east of Louisiana's capital, Baton Rouge. Shreveport was founded in 1836 by General John Covington and named for him, as were most of what are now eastern Louisiana counties. It is the fourth-largest city in Baton Rouge metropolitan area and the largest city in East Baton Rouge Parish. Shreveport is located on the Gulf of Mexico on I-10 and it has a land area of 148 square miles (368 km²). The first Europeans to visit what is now Shreveport were French explorers who named it "Baton Rouge" after their leader, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The French built Fort Point during the 1750s as part of their effort to control access to the mouth of Mississippi River. In 1804, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from New Orleans through Mobile Bay and upriver to take possession of what are now Lafayette and St. Bernard parishes north of Mobile Bay. On July 14, 1804, Jackson's forces reached Bossier Parish just south of present day Shreveport when they attacked an Indian settlement known as Caracol Creek which had been abandoned by its original occupants due to Spanish efforts to control trade along that corridor. That night, about seventy warriors from the Battle of New Orleans under General Robert ELee burned down some homes near present day Crescent City before retiring back across Lake Pontchartrain for the night. Shreveport began growing rapidly during the early 1800s as cotton became America's most important export commodity and large numbers of slaves were exported from South Carolina and Georgia via this route. Cotton plantations were dotting much of East Baton Rouge Parish until well into the 20th century while rice farming continued until around World War II when these holdings were replaced by more mechanized production methods such as irrigation water removal systems and other industrial development projects such as hydraulic fracturing wells that have destroyed many environmentally sensitive areas in eastern Louisiana including parts around downtown Shreveport where manganese mine effluent continues to be discharged into local watersheds
