Ruston, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of St. Tammany, La., in east-central Louisiana. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. The history of Ruston began with several French colonists who founded a trading post in 1715 near what is now downtown Ruston. By 1720, the post had been renamed Fort Beauregard and trade flourished between France and America due to its strategic location on both banks of the river. In 1803, Fort Beauregard was abandoned and became known as Fort Morgan after Maj.-Gen. James K. Polk's successful Invasion of Mexico that year which ended Mexican rule over Texas and California; this name continued to be used for later military posts in Louisiana until it was discontinued by General John Covington during Reconstruction in 1876 because it sounded like an English word (Morgan being British). In 1836, two years after Livingston Parish was created from parts of St. Tammany Parish, Ruston became one of its first communities when white settlers arrived from Tennessee arriv ing through San Antonio Bayou on steamboats called "Arkansas" or "Texas". The town quickly grew around a sawmill and gristmill which operated until 1862 when they were replaced by a brick factory which produced mortar for building walls, roofing tiles and other construction materials during Reconstruction days (1865-1877). For many years following World War II rustons main industry has been agriculture but since 1990s there has been much growth in manufacturing including aluminum cans retail stores such as Dollar General et al along with new additions like AutoZone et al . Although much progress has been made withinRuston's community there are still many challenges facing the town including unemployment rates high enough to require government assistance; limited access to transportation; low quality schools that have caused some residents to leave for better opportunities elsewhere; housing costs that are too expensive for many people living hereabouts; lack of green space Despite these challenges rustons citizens continue to work hard towards making their community more vibrant despite recent setbacks
