The name Ruston comes from a French word meaning "a place where there are many trees." The first settler in what is now Ruston was Nicholas Dooley in 1851. At that time, it was part of Natchitoches Parish. In 1871, it became part ofSabine Parish and then Sabine County in 1882. The present day town of Ruston began as a settlement by men who followed the railroad to construct tracks through rural areas near present-day I-10 and U.S.-27 east of Shreveport. By 1907, when it incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name Jarrellsboro, its population had grown to 1,000 people and included blacksmiths and other related tradesmen who made tools for settlers as well as jewelry and house parts for new arrivals on the frontier town site after Texas seceded from Mexico during the American Civil War five years earlier

Ruston is located in the parish of St. Bernard, Louisiana, in the northeastern corner of the state. The population in 2010 was 10,822. According to the US Census Bureau, Ruston has a total area of 21 square miles (57 square kilometers). The land that now makes up Ruston was first settled by French Canadians who came from Quebec in 1805 and 1811. They brought with them their crops and animals which they raised on farms along the riverbank near present-day Haskell and Bolton roads. In 1832, when Andrew Jackson became president of the United States, he ordered all Native Americans living within six miles of any U.S. military installation be removed by force. This order led to increased competition for farmland between settlers and natives as well as conflict over trade goods and property rights leading to three devastating wars with Native Americans: The Battle of New Orleans (1835), The Battle of San Jacinto (1836), and The Battle of Houston (1845). The town site was founded on December 12, 1873 by James A. Boudreaux after purchasing a tract from John Aversa for $1 per acre ($10 per kilometer). On July 1, 1893 it became part of New Orleans City Limits effective with the creation of that city's 3rd Ward boundary; however, Boudreaux continued to run things alone until his death on January 2nd 1925 at age 85 years old. After his death some members of his family took over management while others sold off portions or left town altogether during the Depression era which caused further decline in traffic through rustling cattle prices which had been an important source revenue stream for early residents agriculturally based businesses such as grocers around this time including Jepson Hardware Store still open today at 7228 Pontchartrain Avenue providing groceries including meatpacking products since 1915! To date there are only two restaurants remaining open in Ruston – one being operated by Jeff’s BBQ downriver at 9031 Old Hammond Road closed circa 2006 but reopened as a steak house called Hometown Grill back then open at 6180 Highway 190th Street closed circa 2009 both places were once home to grocery stores prior to Katrina damage! There have been many changes throughout Ruston's history due primarily to natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina which destroyed virtually everything leaving little reconstruction or development opportunity followed soon thereafter by World War II shortages during VE Day 1944 when most everyone left town due too rationing measures put into effect following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor Ruston slowly regained its former prosperity throughout much later decades becoming known for its arts scene due largely to duPont heirs starting several small businesses hereabouts like Mardi Gras Enterprises produced localaqueous artesanattees ceramically created items made outwater colors mixed media such as mosaics variously incorporating traditional elements found across Louisiana features typically featuring period costumes/dresses interiors often incorporating period architecture etc! rustonedians enjoying live music nightly at various venues downtown while shopping associated cultural events annually Held statewide fiesta weekend each fall attracting hundreds+ participants carnival atmosphere available year round activities typically centered around antique/fantasy hobby shops general merchandise sales & auctions occasional street fairs

In 1915, Ruston incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth due to its connections to New Orleans and other major cities. During World War II, Ruston played an important role in the Allied war effort by providing munitions storage and employment opportunities for local residents. The city has developed many cultural attractions including an art museum, jazz music venues, and a vintage car dealership.
