Ruston is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Ruston is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. It was platted in 1871 by Jno. Fenton and named for Confederate General John C. Ruston. The first settlers were farmers who came to the area from nearby Asbury Park about 1830. By 1872, there were twenty-five families living in ruston and its accompanying hamlet of Holland Landing. In 1876, Jno. Fenton organized a group of men to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) east of Ruston on the Vermilion River for $1 per acre ($8 per hectare). This land would be used as a cotton plantation which would become known as Fenton's Cotton Kingdom Ranch; it would be operated by John C. Ruston and his descendants until it was sold in 1959 to Southern Pacific Railroad Company president David Ladd Sr.. In addition to farming, cattle ranching and lumber production were also important early businesses in ruston's history; one such business is said to have been "The Daily News" newspaper Office Building which stands today on Main Street between Russel and Simpson Streets inside what once was the post office building (now home to Pritchett Chevrolet). The paper office closed around 1960 but still standing are two contributing brick walls from that time period: One wall near corner of Russel and Simpson Streets behind Pritchett Chevrolet & Radio Shack; another wall at intersection of Simpson & Russel Streets just south of Shell station across from Pizza Hut restaurant - all three buildings survive intact today! In 1907, Ruston became an incorporated municipality with Ayer as its first mayor; however, Ayer resigned before taking office due to health reasons after only two months active service...the first black Mayor of any parish in Louisiana...Ayer's successor,...John Givens served until he too resigned due to health reasons later that year...the second black Mayor of any parish in Louisiana...Givens served until he too resigned later that year when he was elected Sheriff instead On December 12th, 1896ruston had its first election held under Reconstruction Laws with James Aiken being elected unopposed for Clerk/Treasurer On January 3rd 1897 Mr Dillard Postoffice opened up shop here giving us our earliest postmark
In 1836, a group of men from Louisiana traveled to the Ruston area and began cattle ranching. The men came from various parts of the state and were motivated by the chance to get rich quickly. The ranching industry was very new at that time, so there wasn't much infrastructure in place to support it. In fact, many of the buildings on today's property were built during this time. The men made a lot of money and also developed their own culture in their small community. They started drinking alcohol and subscribing to Baptist religion, which helped them maintain their social cohesion.
