Ruston is known for its agricultural production, which includes cotton and other crops. The name "ruston" comes from the Cajun word "rustre," meaning dirt or sand bed. Ruston was founded by veterans of World War I on November 3, 1918 as a military post near what is now the intersection of US-15 and FM 565. The town's first post office opened in 1919 with headquarters at what is now the old courthouse building. In 1924, president Calvin Coolidge visited Ruston and pronounced it "the most beautiful place he had ever seen." Two years later, a new courthouse was built on Main Street and named after Judge James Pohlmann (1868-1934). That same year saw the introduction of drinking water to Ruston when an earthen pipeline was constructed from Bogue Bayou to nearby La Salle County. A booster group led by J.P. Morgan helped bring about this development; they donated $5,000 for construction of the pipeline and another $10,000 for operations and maintenance costs over 10 years. In 1927, ruston became one of two towns in Livingston Parish to have electric lights generated by local oil derricks; the other being Thibodaux east of Ruston on LA-20A.[1] By 1933 there were over 100 residents in ruston employing more than 100 workers who produced goods such as flour tortillas, gasolineolinecigarettesand straw hats during those years while also maintaining homeschooling facilities for their children along with providing agricultural products to area farmers

Ruston is a small town in the parish of Ascension, Louisiana, in the United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ruston–Bossier City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Ruston were white men who came from Tennessee and other parts of Kentucky in 1820. They founded a log cabin on the present-day corner of Washington and Adams Streets. The first post office was established here on July 1, 1825. The area that became Ruston was settled by French Creoles who arrived from New Orleans in 1795 as refugees from Spanish rule. The original name for ruston was "Troupes." In 1819, when General Andrew Jackson moved his army through this area to attack Mobile Bay (now Baldwin County), he called upon these Creole settlers to fight for him against Spanish forces under Santa Anna. Many of these people migrated to what is now Arkansas after the war and they began calling their new home "ruston" because it sounded like "russet." In 1830, Captain Alfred Hodge purchased land here and began clearing land for a plantation named Hodge & Son; this plantation would eventually become known as Ruston Plantation fame as one of America's leading cotton plantations during Reconstruction. After all black Americans were free following Reconstruction, many white families also left Ruston for new opportunities in Texas and other parts of America; however, some African American descendants still live here today primarily due to ancestry or connection to the original slaves who worked on the plantation.(Kemple) Apostolic Chapel was built here by Bishop James Ewing on October 12th, 1841 with funds provided by John Brownell(Dixon). Reverend Winton Sills officiated at its dedication ceremonies which included a sermon by Reverend Sills himself about how God had used Mississippi's slave rebellion to bring forth freedom throughout America.(Howe) This chapel served as both an ecclesiastical and social center until it burned down in 1886.(Fletcher) On November 14th 1861 Union soldiers attacked Confederate troops stationed at Bushrod Station near present day Harvey Field Road/US 90 linking Baton Rouge with Little Rock (northwest Arkansas) viaBushrod Station rendezvous point;ighty-one Confederate soldiers died including twenty-seven members of Governor Robert Epps' staff(Lamar). On December 3rd 1861 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No 1088 proclaiming martial law across Louisiana due to disturbances caused by military action outsideof state boundaries;underlying causes included political differences between factions within Confederate Govt.;ensured civil unrest which led Governor Epps to call out militia against local insurgents.(Knight)
