Ruston, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ruston is known for its Manufacturing industry and its agricultural products. The first European to set eyes on what would become Ruston was a French trader named Jean Lafitte in 1785. Lafitte founded a trading post near the present day intersection of I-10 and US 90 in what is now Ruston. His post served as a center for trade with Native Americans and Spanish traders before becoming an area of plantations owned by French families from Acadia during the 18th century. Heinrich Plessis built his plantation on land that he had acquired from René Lavoie in 1812. Plessis became one of the largest landowners in Louisiana after purchasing additional land around ruston from Lavoie's sons and other heirs throughout the 19th century. In 1881, J.P Morgan purchased half ownership in Lafitte's company, L'Acadiana Company Limited, which continued to operate until it merged into American Petroleum Corporation (APC) in 1960s oil business frenzy deregulation days prior to major oil spills across Gulf Coast states; Deepwater Horizon blowout occurred less than two years later.) In 1903, Ruston became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with neighboring Bogalusa Township west of Interstate 10/US 90 junction; both towns were annexed by Jefferson Parish on December 1st 1907 following local referendum vote approved by parish board members.). The first European settlers in what is now Ruston were French colonists who built a trading post and log cabin on the banks of the Sabine River in 1785. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson crossed the river and burned down the original post to prevent Native Americans from using it as their winter encampment. In 1814, Captain John Caddo and his band of Creek Indians attacked white settlers near present-day Ruston. A battle ensued that ended with Caddo's death and most of his attackers being killed or captured by forces under General Zachary Taylor.
