Ruston, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,762 at the 2010 census. Ruston is one of the principal towns in the Livingston Parish subdivision and has a courthouse, post office, library, health clinic and several businesses. Ruston is also home to two high schools: Ruston High School and Lamar Consolidated High School. The first inhabitants of what would become Ruston were French colonists who arrived in 1699. The area was surveyed by Pierre Auguste Cazalet in 1764 as part of La Salle's colony near Baton Rouge. In 1804, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Livingston Parish to attack New Orleans after Lafayette's surrender there. When he reached Ruston on October 8th he found that it had been abandoned by its residents after an advance party discovered a ford across the Atchafalaya River near present-day Lake Pontchartrain which could be crossed only with difficulty due to high water levels. A store and brush fort were built on what is now Academy Street in 1807 by Captain John Huffman as part of defenses against hostile Indians who had invaded Rapides Parish from neighboring Jefferson Parish. A school was built around this time but it burned down in 1854; a new school building was erected on current Academy Street about 1910 when rustons consolidated with other Livingston parishes into Rapides Parish under statehood. Railroad construction began in nearby Alexandria over sixty miles west beginning December 5th 1861 and terminating at Ruston on April 9th 1865;rustons became an incorporated village on October 29th 1865 under state law based on population growth rate withinRapides parish since 1885 when organized as a municipality by act of legislature). During Reconstruction Arkansas Valley Railroad Co (ARB) passenger trains stopped at our station serving lunchtime passengers until late evening making it convenient for farmers to get their goods from the surrounding countryside to marketplaces including Moorefield where cotton prices were high during those years before railroads developed transportation costs effective marketing these products closer to consumers thereby reducing rural poverty during this time period while buggy cars replaced horse drawn wagons carrying produce long distance

Ruston is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 746 at the 2010 census. Ruston is home to two churches and several businesses. It's also the location of the Ruston-Bossier City Airport. The first settler in what is now Ruston was Jotham Boulware, who arrived in 1802. He named his place after his brother-in-law, John Caddo, who had settled nearby in 1807. In 1851, General Edwin Easley built a log cabin on land he acquired east of present day downtown ruston. This became known as "the old plantation house". In 1865, General James Hogg purchased the original cotton plantation from David Gilmore for $2,000 cash and set about building it into a large cotton plantation with over 100 slaves. By 1870, Hogg's plantations had been divided into 196 separate fields and were producing an average of 150 bales of cotton per acre! By 1880 only 12 slaves remained on Hogg's 125 acres; however this number increased to 178 by 1890 due to new investment by Alexander Graham Bell and others in the area around Ruston/Bossier City airport (now known as Haley International Airport). AfterAlexander Graham Bell's death in 1902$, many local investors pooled their money to build him a new home which still stands today across from Haley International Airport - one of only three remaining examples of an antebellum mansion still standing in Louisiana pre-integration! During World War II much activity occurred near Haley International Airport as research facilities were created here including Air University radar dishes and other equipment used during World War II bombing raids against Japan; these activities continued until 1946 when air traffic split off to become self-sufficient with Blanchard Field being transferred to Texas Memorial Airport!. The military barracks that remain today on Hamilton Street between Jackson Boulevard and Stadium Drive are part of this history dating back to WWII! Ruston has experienced many changes throughout its history; some more significant than others: 1920s - A post office was established here with Wm Fenton serving as the first postmaster; this served the community until 1925 when elections were moved to New Orleans because ruston residents wanted their own government! 1960s - A few businesses opened here including Woolworths which later closed its doors after becoming too big forrustondownevelopment plans called for!! 1969 - The first church was built here followed by another just south of it 1974 - First high school opened here 1975 - Rustonissa Post Office added 1978 - First store open locally (Fulton’s) 1979 - Original hospital built here 1982 - 1st streetlight installed 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
In the year 1874, a group of Methodist ministers and their families moved from Illinois to ruston, Louisiana. The town was founded on an agricultural plantation that had been acquired by Methodists in the 1830s. The first post office was established in ruston in 1875. A cotton gin was built in 1878 and became the town's first commercial enterprise. By 1886, there were two churches and twenty-four businesses in Ruston. During World War I, the town participated in the American military effort as part of General John J. Pershing's "Great White Hope" campaign. After the war ended, Ruston experienced a period of growth and development. In 1926, it became a city with its own charter and mayoralty. In 1990, Ruston was designated a United States historical site.
