Polk delivered an address at the jail here on February 12th; General Ulysses S. Grant came to visit this area during World War II; and poet Maya Angelou was born here on October 15th 1944

Pineville is a small town in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Pineville was Bienville in 1721 and he named it "Natchez". The town started as a trading post on the banks of the Conchouche River. In 1814, pine trees were brought from Tennessee and set up in front of the present courthouse. A post office was established in 1827 and since then, Pineville has been an important center for commerce and culture. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army through Lafayette Parish to cross into Union territory near Jefferson Davis' plantation at Greenwood Plantation, most residents opted to stay put and fight for their country instead of joining Ewell's forces. Some 5% of the town's population joined Ewell while another 95% surrendered or fled south before they could be captured or killed. In 1865-1868, many people who had evacuated returned to Pineville after learning that there would be no battle because Union General Ulysses S Grant had withdrawn his army from West Alabama toward Corinth Mississippi On October 25th 1888 several Volunteer militiamen from Pineville fought against freedman rebels led by James Hogg at Battle of Newton Bridge near Quitman County line in what became known as Hogg’s Rebellion In December 1907 two young girls from nearby Iberia Parish were kidnapped by Completionists working for Lumbermen Jesse James (the Kid) and David Copperfield during the Grotto Robbery which left nine women captives including five children ages four to eight years old On December 4th 1907 Johnnie Cochran who was jailed on a charge of breaking into a train loaded with cotton coming downriver at Vernon Parish broke out three deputies guarding Cochran inside the jail cell preparing to shoot him when Cochran jumped out onto an upper track where two locomotives waiting below derailed and overturned causing all three deputies to fall off their horses running towards safety leaving Cochran free On January 1st 1908 members of Fenton’s Independent Order No 622 who had gathered around Crown Point Light House #1 upon seeing smoke rising along Mobile Bay heard gunfire coming from outside their campfires advancing towards them shouts “This is our home fire! This is our home fire!” slowly advancedFurther screams turned into sobs as they saw men wearing blue uniforms run across Mobile Bay towards them carrying barrels filled with grapeshot one man yelled “We have nothing here but scalps! We have nothing here but scalps! Just let us go now we will never hurt you again!” just then about 100 men armed with carbines burst through ranks opening fire killing twelve men (six civilians), wounding twenty-eight others including six boys ranging in age from six months old until eighteen years old seven women including four sisters aged thirteen to fifty years old; taking captive eleven citizens making this one of Louisiana's largest scalpings ever
Pineville was founded in 1790 by James Robertson and is the oldest town in Pineville Parish. The first settler in Pineville was John McKnight, who arrived in 1790. In 1815, the town of Pineville became a parish under the jurisdiction of Shreveport.
