Sauer & Son in 1865 for $4,500 cash before being moved to Plainview near Houma during World War II to produce food for troops stationed overseas; they remain operational today as JMS Grains Mill #1 and #2 (formerly known as Plains Alloys) with over 100 employees worldwide. The town's commercial center began developing soon afterward with what would become its most distinctive feature: its three downtown blocks that comprised its monumental courthouse square - home to many local businesses until 1924 when it was replaced by a more modern structure - as well as several banks and five churches dating from the early 1800s through much of the 1920s along with two schools (grades K-8) until 1954 when both were closed due to budget cuts led by then Superintendent of Schools Cotton Moseley Jr..
