Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Pineville area was first settled by Acadians who arrived in 1755. On December 12, 1801, a group of Ft. Jackson (now New Orleans) Marines under Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson invaded what is now Pineville after learning that General Andrew Jackson had ordered the burning of all Spanish settlements in Louisiana. Wilkinson's force consisted of about 100 men and five cannons; they destroyed two homes and cut down many trees before being driven back by Major John Sibley's militia with only one man killed and five wounded. The victory marked the beginning of Lafitte's campaign to take over much of East Louisiana from Spain. In 1804, Ulysses S Grant fought in battle at Fort Donelson near present-day Monroe as part of his general expedition against Napoleon Bonaparte. At that time Pineville was known as "the smallest village on our side" because only about 30 people lived there at the time.
