Pineville is a small town located in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. Pineville was founded in 1827 by Frenchmen and Native Americans as a trading post on the lower Mississippi River. After sugarcane became popular in the region, the post prospered until it closed in 1851. In 1892, Pineville was renamed for General James A. Pine of Confederate States Army fame when he served as governor of Louisiana during Reconstruction. In 1916, pinevile merged with neighboring Village of Alexandria to form one municipality with a population of 14,579. The merger resulted from efforts by Pineville officials to improve their communities' infrastructure and consolidate services into one place. It also increased competition for jobs and housing within the new municipality and led to increasing tension between pinevile residents and Alexandria residents over issues such as public transportation, zoning changes, and property values. In 2000, pinevile voted to secede from Alexandria after struggles over zoning changes that favored Alexandra over pinevile's interests; however, this referendum failed to receive enough signatures to be ratified into law. Simply put: When we think about 'global village,' we usually think about places like New York City or Mumbai...but we're missing out on other really interesting places where globalization has had an impact" (p 8-9).
