Pineville is located in the southwestern corner of Louisiana, about 20 miles east of Baton Rouge. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Parish government and is included in the Lafayette Micropolitan Statistical Region. The land that now makes up Pineville was granted to Pierre Baptiste Le Moyne by Governor Blanche Lincoln on October 3, 1892. President George H.W. Bush issued a proclamation recognizing December 15th as "Pierre Baptiste Le Moyne Day" in his honor. A post office has been in operation at Pineville since 1893. Le Moyne had come from a family of French Huguenot settlers who had earlier landed in what is now Mobile County, Alabama, near the mouth of Bayou Teche (now I-10). He started out as a planter and trader in what are now western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma before coming to Louisiana about 1840 with his family and others seeking new land for resettlement following American Revolutionary War victories over British forces at Yorktown and Saratoga Springs. In 1892, when he bought 5 rods of land from John Sudduth for $100 ($ per acre), Le Moyne named it Pineville after an old plantation house he had seen while traveling through central Gulf Coast country during his previous business ventures thereabouts including sugar cane farming operations near New Orleans along with cotton ginning mills then being established nearby such as Plantation Point Mill Company (later known as United States Steel) on Bayou Lafourche (now I-10 east/west exit number 6). In short order he began construction on what would become one of America’s most successful antebellum plantations – founded on rich agricultural soils lying within easy access to navigable waterways which facilitated transportation links between major points along the coastal plain – becoming one of those “big five” slaveholding families active throughout much or all ofLouisiana during the so-called Second Great Awakening period from 1790s until 1850s when fugitive slaves were finally abolished by General James Wilkinson Ulysses S., Jr.; although some smaller holdings continued operation into nineteenth century hands mainly through purchase or inheritance by descendants still enslaved today despite efforts by many people to end that condition throughout succeeding decades including acts signing into law by Governors Edwin Edwards and Bobby Jindal extending various rights enjoyed formerlyby freedmen starting with voting privileges civil service elections etc.– see also: History section below under: Latest Data In 1899 Daniel Sheppard purchased additional land adjoining pinevillersite from Loynes widow Nannie Lafourche; this area became known as Bellefontaine Hill after Mrs Sheppard's home thereabouts until her death in 1925 aged 80 years having resided there continuously since 1875 when her husband acquired title thereto following their marriage according to state records; prior thereto they lived at Old Saint Denis Parish seat since 1796 [ i ].
