Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan area. Pineville is a small, but thriving city in the parish of Jefferson in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Pineville is located on the Mississippi River at its confluence with the Houma River. The first settlers of Pineville were French Creoles who arrived in what is now Pineville during the 18th century. The town site was donated by General Nicholas-Jacques Lafitte to the Parish of Jefferson in 1824 as part of a land grant he made to his brother, Pierre Laclède. In 1827, pine trees were being grown for lumber in what is today downtown and other parts of town by local farmers. By 1830, many people had moved into what is now Pineville from surrounding parishes because of cheap land and good water supplies. The name "Pineville" was given to it by General Lafayette as a way to avoid confusion with another nearby community called "Le Pavillon" (which means "the pavilion"). In 1840, general Isaac Neely established an arsenal here that became one of the most important weapons manufacturers in south Louisiana. In 1865, when Confederate forces burned New Orleans after their defeat at Gettysburg, General James Longstreet ordered all arms dealers throughout south Louisiana to destroy any stockpiles they may have left behind. Many businesses refused to comply and fires broke out across much of north Louisiana as a result; this included fires around Pineville which destroyed homes and killed several people

The community was named after John James Pine and his father-in-law, David White (born 1800). Pineville was established in 1827 as a small village on the east bank of the upper Mississippi River. In 1830, it became a post office under the name "New Acres". In 1836, Pineville incorporated as a town with a population of 100 residents. It remained an unincorporated community until 1958 when it became one of Jefferson Parish's 11 townships. The Post Office closed in 1960 and been reopened as part of Retail Promotions Inc., which continued to run it until 2003. John Jourdan Pine (1805–1872), son of John James Pine and his wife Margaret Chalmers Goodspeed (1792–1864), began working for Andrew Jackson's presidential campaign in 1837 and helped organize most of what would become New Orleans' voting blocs—the Anti-Slavery League among them—during the 1840 election season.
