When General Taylor took control of Louisiana after reconstruction ended, he appointed Mrs Howland justice of peace for Claiborne Parish; she held this position from 1875 until her death in 1896. James Gregg also served as justice of peace from 1865 until his death in 1903; he had one daughter remaining at home at that time--Nancy Neely Gregg born October 21st 1865).
