In 1854, when Congress extended territorial boundaries to include all of present-day Jefferson Parish, Pineville became one of its towns. A lumberyard and sawmill were established there soon after and remain today among the most important businesses in town. In 1910, during World War I, Pineville became home to what was then America's only military airfield serving American forces in Europe: Lecompton Field (later Eglin Air Force Base). Afterward, Lecompton served as a stopover for troops traveling between Camp Beauregard on Baton Rouge and Normandy before finally being closed down and turned over to local civilian use in 1945. Today Eglin AFB still serves as an active USAF base with bomber flights taking place from it providing cover for exercises such as Operation Neptune Spear; however most military activities now take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson outside Anchorage, Alaska which has been their main hub since about 1950. The cotton industry declined following World War II but continued until recently through numerous companies that have left or been merged into others throughouttowns across America due to changing trends; however Pineville has remained anchored by its agricultural sector ever since becoming a center for sugarcane production around 1930sbeginning with John Pemberton's family dynasty running one of America's leading sugar empires until they sold it off several times during ensuing decades culminating with deregulation which led to steady decline starting around 2000 accompanied by significant job losses aided and abetted by Katrina while also creating some serious environmental problems including major flooding problems associated with nearby Lake Pontchartrain caused largely by heavy rains runoff from surrounding corn fields; this despite much effort over many years both within town government as well as outside groups trying unsuccessfully to revive interest & investment especially once again following recent repaving efforts resulting primarily from storm damage control measures done immediately following Catrina Today pinevillians continue their tradition of hard work & charity together contributing significantly not just financially but emotionally too often going above & beyond simply giving back
