Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Pineville is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and is bordered by Thibodaux to the south and east, Beauregard to the north, and Plaquemines to the west. Pineville was founded in 1822 by General John Cushing as a fur-trading post on what would now be called Old Pineville Road. In 1832, Captain Alfred Vail established a ferry service across the river between present day Pineville and Thibodaux. When Baton Rouge was founded in 1836, nearby Cypress Point became its first commercial center with general store and cotton gin operations emerging soon afterward. TheUnion Pacific Railroad arrived in Pineville in 1881; its line extended from downtown Baton Rouge northeast through pinevillian territory until it reached Gulfport just south of modern-day Slidell that year. The railroad's arrival transformed pinevillians into farmers who produced corn, rice, beans, sugar cane and other crops for local markets; also resulting were large numbers of workers employed by UP during these years including many women who made light work of agriculture while developing their own businesses around home or outside the village limits (e.g., dairies). With World War II looming large along with increased demand for military materials throughout southern Louisiana, pinevillians went out into production as well - both men working on construction projects such as airfields or shipsyards along coastal areas like Cameron City or Alexandria Naval Station or those helping build tank farms near Slidell; as well as women running various enterprises such as blacksmithing shops or grocery stores along Route 80/I-10 within their homes9—all becoming wartime necessities more numerous than ever before thanks largely to wartime shortages which had begun surfacing nationally following America's entry into World War I eleven months earlier9— culminating with America's victory over Japan at Hiroshima two years later11—pinevillians found themselves once again thrust into an industrial phase which would last right up until suburbanization beginning in earnest throughout southern Louisiana during late 1960s12—ultimately resulting in decline overall economic activity throughout much of southeastern Louisiana during 1970s13). Pineville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Pineville were French Canadians who came to the area in 1803 and 1804. They named their land "Pontchartrain," after General James K. Polk's brother-in-law, Louis Napoleon Pontchartrain. The first post office was established in 1807 and the first store was built in 1809 by John Atherton. In 1826, a school was built for students from surrounding parishes and the town became known as "School Hill." In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded northern Louisiana, he passed through Pineville on his way to Baton Rouge. After Union forces destroyed his bridge over Cypress Creek outside of town on July 5th 1861, Ewell went into hiding in nearby Lachine before returning to Baton Rouge two days later under cover of darkness with some 1,000 men to rejoin his force at Kenner Junction near Baton Rouge. When Union troops discovered this deception and burned down Ewell's house within sight of Pineville on July 11th 1861 (the date of his supposed return), they conducted an attack against the village that resulted in only one casualty; local militiamen killed nine Confederates and captured five others including Ewell himself (). Pineville was founded in 1815 by John Baptist Pine and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after a small pine tree that stood in the center of the original settlement. In 1821, a post office was established in Pineville and remains in operation today. The community grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location on the edge of a tract of land that had been purchased by Captain James Kenedy. By 1850, Pineville had a population of around 100 people and consisted of seven frame homes, nine shops, two churches, and one school. However, during the American Civil War, Pineville suffered much damage from fighting and skirmishes between Confederate forces and Union troops. By 1865, however, most of the town had been destroyed as Union forces withdrew from Louisiana. In 1886,pineville become an independent parish under the jurisdiction of New Orleans
