The name comes from English words meaning "bridge over the fast stream." Opelousas became an important economic center within southern Louisiana during Reconstruction due to its location at the crossroads of two major slave routes, one going north via Mobile Bayou to New Orleans and one going south via Lake Pontchartrain to New Mexico Territory and Texas. In 1881, Edwin Booth shot President James Garfield while he was attending a dinner at Greer's plantation outside Baton Rouge; Booth had recently left America for good and planned to travel through central Africa before returning home to assassinated President Garfield. Many people believed that Booth had acted alone when he killed Garfield, but it turned out that multiple shooters were involved including Booth's brother Sam (who later died in prison). This event led to increased security measures around presidential events across America which would continue until assassination attempts against various public figures ended with Operation Neptune Spear in 2014 by United States Secret Service agents acting on orders from then-President Barack Obama

Opelousas, Louisiana is located in the central part of the state of Louisiana. The city was founded by General Josephus P. Newby on April 1, 1803 as a saltworks and post office. On November 3, 1861, Opelousas became the capital of Jefferson Parish after it was created from parts of St. Bernard Parish. In 1898, Opelousas experienced its first tornado outbreak when a category 5 storm struck on October 24th. The storm damaged or destroyed over 100 homes and businesses before dissipating just minutes later. The following year saw another destructive tornado outbreak that caused extensive damage across the city including $20 million in damages to businesses and homes. On February 14th, 2004, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Gulfport-Biloxi with winds up to 145 mph (230 km/h). After making landfall near New Orleans Harbor, Katrina rapidly moved inland becoming a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds up to 130 mph (210 km/h). Within hours of landfall at Opelousas, Katrina had killed at least 69 people and left more than 1 million people without power or shelter. By Thursday nightfall the storm had reached its peak intensity with wind speeds reaching 160 mph (260 km/h)
Opelousas was founded in 1804 by Captain John S. Holland as a small trading post on the banks of the Assumption River. The town quickly grew, and in 1824 it became the capital of Louisiana. In 1828, Opelousas was designated a city and its first mayor was James H. Caldwell. By 1840, Opelousas had become the largest town in Louisiana with a population of over 2,000 people. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked and captured Opelousas, putting an end to its days as an important commercial center. After Confederate forces withdrew from Louisiana in 1865, Opelousas reverted back to its previous status as a trading post until it was destroyed by fire in 1898. The town remains ghostly today and is only accessible through guided tours given by descendants or historians who are able to document and preserve the site's history.
