Opelousas is a small town in the parish of Nicholls in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 9,554 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in Opelousas was by Father Gabriel Bourg, who founded a mission on an island near what is now downtown Opelousas in 1718. Bourg's missionary effort failed and he abandoned his colony after a few years; however, French colonists continued to settle in Opelousas for many years thereafter. On September 4, 1803, during the War of 1812, General Andrew Jackson moved artillery from Baton Rouge to Opelousas as part of an effort to defend the city from possible attack by Spanish forces under Santa Anna. Jackson's move came two days before Napoleon Bonaparte's Invasion of America which led to the end of American Independence. In 1814, James Kenedy bought land adjacent to present-day downtown Opelousas from Jean Lafitte and began development of what would become Kenedy Place – one of the most successful streetcar systems in America at that time. In 1827, Lafitte sold his holdings to Nicholas Biddle who renamed it "Biddle Street" after himself and developed it into one of the most important commercial areas in early New Orleans. A fire destroyed much of downtown Opelousas on November 5th 1865 while several blocks away from Biddle Street; this event is generally considered as being one of the earliest arson attacks against American architecture and business structures in New Orleans history. The fire also damaged or destroyed over 100 buildings includingmany prominent historic landmarks includingthe Grand Hotel (now known as simply "Hilton"), Stroud House (now known as simply "House No." 2"),and other notable buildings throughout downtown OpelousAS well as numerous churches and other educational institutions located within easy walking distanceof each other across Biddle Street..
