The area now known as Opelousas was first settled by the Caddo people who arrived in what is now northeastern Louisiana in the 18th century. By 1812, they had established an agricultural society that grew to include over 100 families. In 1819, Samuel Loyola founded a school here which became one of the leading prep schools in America. In 1836, Opelousas was incorporated as a Village with a population of only 150 residents; it had been organized from portions of two other villages: Our Lady of Good Counsel and Saint Mary's Parish (now New Orleans). A year later, it gained its current name: after General James Kenedy's victory at San Jacinto against Mexican General Santa Anna in April of that year. On July 16, 1860, Opelousas surrendered to Confederate forces during the Battle of Independenceville; this was one of several engagements throughout Mississippi Valley Theater where Confederate forces fought Union troops under Ulysses S. Grantwood II.. On December 22nd 1861 - less than three months after Opelousas' capitulation - General Robert E Lee arrived at Vermillion River Bridge across Vermilion Bayou and ordered his army into Mexico City without resistance or surrendering any cannons or men... local historians believe that many soldiers on both sides were killed or enslaved when their units crossed the river bridge... At least 562 citizens - mostly women and children - were taken prisoner by Confederates throughout the duration of hostilities... more than 1/3 (342) percent (of all prisoners) were black... Opelousas is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Jefferson Parish and has been since 1836. Opelousas is located on the Mississippi River south of New Orleans. The first Europeans to visit what is now Opelousas were French settlers who founded the city in 1718 as a trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River. The name "Opelousas" comes from an Indian word meaning "mouth of cover." In 1803, General James K. Polk invaded New Orleans and burned it to the ground during his military occupation of that city; this event led to Opelousas becoming an up-and-coming river port with goods available for shipment downriver from New Orleans by land rather than through sea. In 1865, when Confederate General Pemberton's Army moved northward along Interstate 10, they reached Opelousas just before its destruction by Union forces during Battle of Baton Rouge; as a result, much of what is now downtown Opelousas was built over what was once battle ground and commerce center (the old courthouse still stands). The community grew rapidly during World War II due to shortages of munitions caused by America's involvement in World War II; as a result, many businesses closed their doors after Pearl Harbor and never reopened until after the war ended. Because so many companies had closed during wartime rationing activities began immediately following V-E Day which lasted into 1949 when all restrictions were lifted allowing again extensive growth throughout Jackson Ward area which bordered Stroudsburg area eastward including today’s business district called Canal Street Corridor (CSD) stretching from I-10 westward past Lake Pontchartrain across Live Oak Boulevard to Elysian Fields Cemetery near Napoleon Avenue) The economy started to rebound in the early 1990s with new shipping terminals being constructed on I-10 just south of downtown Opelousas making it easier for businesses willing or able to move goods inland or outlandishly priced items such as Harley Davidson motorcycle products possible again bringing back some former businesses which either had been inactive or had struggled since prohibition ended more than 50 years earlier including several juke joints open 24/7 in those days which are long gone now but their heyday may have been short lived because state regulations made it difficult for any company other than funeral homes to open inside cemeteries not too mention strict noise ordinances prohibiting loud music playing within 500 feet away from any school property without prior written consent from parents
