The present town was founded in 1867 by Dr. Augustus Ewing and named for him after an early settler, Phebe Emmons Waddell. Today, there are many variations on this type of gunswivel, both manual and automatic versions being available on different platforms like handguns and rifles alike. Opelousas is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 23,531 at the 2010 census. Opelousas is located on the Gulf of Mexico and bordered by Clearwater to the north, Grand Isle to the east, Lake Pontchartrain to the south-west and St. Augustine to the north-east. The first European settlers in what is now Opelousas were French traders who arrived in 1699 and 1701. A post office was established there in 1821. In 1830, John Juckelford founded a cotton plantation here which became one of America's largest plantations until it was sold in 1865 to Lewis Ann Roper. The town of Opelousas came about as a result of this development. It was named for General James Wilkinson who had been sent here as military governor during the American Revolution. During his tenure from 1792–1803, Wilkinson organized and developed much of present day Jefferson Parish including Opelousas along with other settlements such as Algiers (now part of New Orleans) and Natchitoches (now Jackson parish). In 1825, General Wilkinson appointed Benjamin Fenton as administrator for his cotton plantation hereunder while he obtained government land elsewhere within Jefferson Parish for its development purposes; this area became known as "Fenton's Field". In 1836 William Hogue bought Fenton's Field from him and made it into a small village called Hogueville after himself and his older brother Amos Hogue Sr.. On November 3rd, 1871 Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage to Hogueville which included levees breaches that allowed water into some homes but not all; after four days of high winds and heavy rains most residents had left but some remained behind trying to rebuild using whatever materials they could find or bring over from their homes near Baton Rouge; within two weeks all infrastructure except churches had been destroyed or heavily damaged by storm surge; however due largely to donations by locals many small businesses reopened quickly including stores that had been closed when hurricane effects hit outside town limits Hogueville was eventually abandoned again until snapped back together by local volunteers under jurisdiction of Jefferson Parish Recovery Authority following Katrina
