Iberville named his new town La Nouvelle Orléans after his old colony in France (the name change occurred because Orléans had been renamed Paris following its Capture by British forces). After Iberville's death circa 1740, his widow married rearman Jean Baptiste Point du Sable who had also acquired land east of present-day Opelousas from Parenteau some time earlier. du Sable built a small fort or "château" near what is now downtown Opelousas in 1760 as part of efforts to protect his holdings against possible Indian attacks; it served as a trading post until ceded to Spain in 1800.) In 1802–1803, James Kenedy purchased property betweenriver and Post Road from les Demoiselles de la Bourse (a group led by Madame de Lafayette) for $1400 which he used as a farmstead before donating it to charity upon his death in 1824; it currently serves as Stonington Episcopal Church., one block west from Kenedy Street across from Interstate 10..
