Opelousas was founded in 1815 by General Andrew Jackson as a port on the Mississippi River. The city grew rapidly during the 1800s and early 1900s, becoming one of the most important ports in the country. Opelousas became an American city in 1923 when it was incorporated as a municipal government. In 1959, Opelousas became an unincorporated community within Orleans Parish. Today, Opelousas is a thriving city with a diverse population and rich history. The first Europeans to visit what is now Opelousas were French traders and explorers who traveled upriver from Mobile Bay in 1718. They named their new settlement after Count Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, governor of modern day Louisiana at the time. By 1721, however, French traders had abandoned this town due to malaria outbreaks that killed many people. A group of Spanish colonists followed in 1725 and named it La Florida de las Antillas (the Florida of America). However, this name was also abandoned because there was no real land under that name. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson decided to establish a new port on the Mississippi River for United States forces fighting against Napoleon Bonaparte’s forces in Europe. He ordered Captain James Fenton to build a wharf across from where he would live later that year. The wharf served as the operational base for Ulysses S Grant’s army during both World War I and World War II while other parts of New Orleans were used for storage or military barracks. In 1804, the Opelousas Purchase was made by the United States to acquire land in what is now Louisiana. The purchase included much of what is now New Orleans and most of Louisiana's present-day parishes. The area that became Opelousas was first settled by Native Americans, who were known as the Iberian people. The first European to visit this area was Pierre Charles L’Enfant, who founded the city of New Orleans on August 4, 1803. By 1830, Spanish colonists had moved into this area and began to cultivate rice and cotton plantations. In 1836, a band of Comanche Indians attacked an American military detachment stationed at Baton Rouge and killed 11 soldiers. This event led to increased tensions between Americans and Spanish colonists in what is known as the Mexican War (1846-48). On November 3, 1836, General Zachary Taylor invaded Mexico with 10,000 troops under his command and successfully captured Mexico City; however, he did not occupiedOpelousas until January 1st following his victory at San Jacinto Creek (now part of Houston). After victory over Mexico in that war, US president James K. Polk decided that New Orleans should be the new capital of America because it wasthe largest city in Latin America without a Mexican garrison. By September 30th 1840 all but 350 Spaniards living inNewOrleans had fled or been driven out due to violence from American forces based there during the Mexican War (1846-48). As a result of these events Spanish control over Opelousas ended on October 17th 1840 when US Marines landed onshoreto take possessionofthecity aftera two-week siege which resulted in only minor damage done toSpanish infrastructure whileAmerican forces destroyed many buildings withinNewOrleans includingSpanish barracks.,
