Opelousas is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It was founded by French colonists in 1763 and has been the center of local cotton production since the late 19th century. The town is home to Opelousas High School, which ranked first in Louisiana for academic achievement in 2013. The area now comprising Opelousas was originally part of the Baton Rouge parish until 1802 when it was annexed by Jefferson Parish. In 1814, Opelousas became a city and remained so until it merged with otherJefferson parishes on November 3rd, 1954. In 1870, Stephen Dillard built what would become Dillard's Store on State Street in downtown Opelousas. The store continued to be operational until ceded ownership to Gulf Oil Corporation during the 1970s. At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Gulf Oil employed more than 1,000 people at Dillard's Store and four other stores within the city limits of Opelousas; however due to an oil embargo that began on December 8th, 1941 Gulf Oil ceased operations at all five stores by January 1942 as a result of American military occupying forces' regulations limiting companies' ability to sell goods while they were being confiscated or requisitioned for use by the war effort. Today there are only two buildings remaining from those days: one is used as office space by GulfCorp and another is currently housing a vacant lot that once housed the old Post Office Building which served as both civic center and courthouse before demolition commenced in early 2017; this property forms part of what is now known as "The Block" located near Interstate 10 just east of Confederate Avenue (approximately).
