Gun hammers have been a part of the Opelousas community for over 100 years. The first gun hammer in the town was built by George W. Beal, who also operated a sawmill and blacksmith shop. Beal started using a hammer to pounding nails into boards in 1892. By 1907, guns had become prevalent in the Opelousas area andhammering became less common, replaced by anvil-based methods. In 1924, Grafton Hammer Co., Inc. began production of gun hammers in Opelousas, making them one of the few American manufacturers of this type of hammer at that time. In 1957, Gunsmiths Hammer & Tool Company merged with Grafton Hammer Co., Inc., creating what is now Gunsmiths Hammer & Tool Company LLC (GHT). Over the years, GHT has produced more than 50 different types of hammers and tools for use with firearms including 1911 pistols, shotguns, rifles and auto pistols. Today we continue to produce quality products that are used by both amateur and professional shooters across America.

There are also hammer-and-nut hammers, percussion pistols, and impact hammers. Hammer-and-nut hammers are the simplest type of hammer. They consist of ahammer (usually made from metal) and an Nut (a small, round piece of metal). When you apply pressure to the Nut, it causes the hammer to strike the object you're trying to pry open. Percussion pistols use two hammerheads that move in opposite directions when struck. This action creates a sound that can be heard by someone nearby when striking an object with a percussion pistol. Impact hammers use two opposed Hammer heads that collide in order to create force and damage objects close by.
The Opelousas Rifle and Pistol Company was a rifle and pistol armory that served in the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The company was organized on October 16, 1861, in Opelousas Parish, Louisiana. The armory operated from 1861 to 1865. In 1862, the Opelousas Rifle and Pistol Company lost its main armament when it was forced to surrender at Appomattox Court House after being overwhelmed by Union forces. The company's rifles were given to other Confederate units as part of their surrendered equipment. On April 3, 1865, theOpelousas Rifle and Pistol Company disbanded due to lack of funds. Its assets were transfered to the Post-Civil War Veteran Reserve Corps (PCVRC) in New Orleans.
Opelousas was founded in 1804 by General James Wilkinson and his brother, Colonel John Wilkinson. The city was named for the Opelousas River, which flows through the town. The city rose to prominence as a transportation center during the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. It became a manufacturing center for agricultural products during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 2005, Opelousas experienced its first major economic setback due to Hurricane Katrina. However,Opelousas has since regained its former status as an important commercial and industrial center in southeastern Louisiana.

Basically, guns were created with various ways of hitting things with something heavy so they could go off like cannons/mortar shells etcetera. Eventually, muzzleloaders became popular and required someone else–the triggerman–to cock and pull back the gun until all rounds had been fired before putting it back in line(shotguns only allow you to chamber more than one round at once). This process was known as cocking/cocking the weapon before pulling back on the stock(this part is usually done by using either your left hand or your right hand because most people hold their firearms with their left hand). Eventually, standardization across manufacturers occurred meaning similar tools could now be bought from multiple retailers including online stores[6]). Hammer usage has changed over time too; particularly since 1911 when automatic pistols became prevalent[7],[8]. In 1911 Automatic Pistol Association International standardized dimensions for handgun hammer specifications,[9],[10],[11] which led eventually to Hammermetrics being developed which measure how much force must be applied before each shot fires according to published specs. Some revolvers still require manual cocking prior to each shot even though they now sport automatics courtesy of those standards! Hammer measurements vary depending on whether it's an Open Face or Closed Face Hammer; however overallhammer pressure remains essentially constant regardless of design choice[12]. Opelousas is a city in the parish of Livingston, in the eastcentral part of Louisiana. The population was 8,611 at the 2010 census. It is the seat for Orleans Parish. The first post office opened in 1825 and the town was platted in 1854.
