On January 8th, 1804, Jackson ordered General Robert Ewell to march southward from Baton Rouge through Rapides Parish into Jefferson Parish to take possession of what was then called Spanish Fort on the Garden Isle River about four miles north of Opelousas Boulevard (present day Coliseum Drive). Spanish Fort had been abandoned by its Spanish garrison less than a year earlier when they surrendered to American forces during the Battle of Baton Rouge under Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Amherst led by Captain Elijah Woodbridge. Spanish Fort was originally built as a small fortification inside an older mound overlooking the river that served as a landing point for vessels going upriver from Havana Bay until it became useless during World War II when all land along riverbanks were seized by US Naval Forces for construction or storage purposes during wartime naval operations including airfields like NAS Algiers Point where Japanese aircraft flew combat missions against America before being interned during World War II; see also: Harborage Act of 1915 which authorized US Naval Forces Operation Highjump using RAF squadrons operating out of Bahrain) In 1805, General Wilkinson captured Mobile Bay with 5 warships and 170 men Landing Party #1 on January 10th while pursuing retreating British Admiral Nelson off Pensacola Beach FL with HMS Royal Sovereign anchored off Negro Island just upstream from modern day Annapolis Junction MD with USS Constitution moored offshore almost opposite Pearl Harbor HI . Although never used as an anchorage location again upon American independence this site remains important today thanks primarily to its proximity to both major ports Clinton IL (just south of town) and Baton Rouge LA giving it convenient access both markets/shops/restaurants etc...
