Opelousas was founded on August 12, 1803 by General John Wilkinson and his men after they arrived from England in an American Revolutionary War ship called "Enterprise". It was named for Admiral James Opelousas who fought against British forces in the American Revolution. On July 15, 1836, General Andrew Jackson's Fourth Corps marched through Opelousas and surrendered to General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Baton Rouge. The city has been since its founding a center for cotton farming with many plantations still extant today including: Canebrake Plantation (now known as Old Spanish Castle), Don Carlos plantation (now known as Don Carlos Manor), Eagle Ford Plantation (now known as Mount Pleasant Manor), Monticello Plantation (now known as Monticello Mansion), and Pilot Knob Plantation (later renamed Prairie View A&M University). Opelousas is also home to several other businesses such as Dell Inc., BP America Inc., ExxonMobil Corporation, Monsanto Company and Southern Pacific Railroad Company which have their headquarters there. Many OPELOUSAS residents are commuters working out of New Orleans or Metairie suburbs. There are several dozen small businesses located throughout Opelousas that support nearly 2 million people within its boundaries making it one of America’s fastest growing cities with continuing growth prospects according to Forbes magazine’s 2017 report “The Fastest Growing Cities In America” Today's Opelousa City Limits were established when Captain Charles Pogue established himself along this portion of Louisiana Bayou Teche River some time before 1794 while he served under Rear Admiral Edward Preble during Pontiac’s Expedition against Mexico led by Rear Admiral Thomas Gage...Captain Pogue had originally landed his party at PointConception about four miles below this place Aug 12th 1803 when reaching our present site after leaving England via Mobile Bayou then following what is now I-10 east past Thibodaux then down Tensay Channel into Angelina County where we anchored early morning Sept 3rd 1803 en route back upriver again march capture Fort Necessity Sept 5th...From here Captaine Pogue took us due southwesterly along bayou Teche until coming ashore opposite Cypresses Bluff about three leagues below that point Apr 30th 1804 having first passed through these latter hills so convenient for us being situ'd upon a peninsula formed by two small lakes whose outlet empties into Bayou Teche about midway between Thibodaux & Lafayette...In short we came within very few rods indeed roadsteaded abt two leagues wide water navigation possible lying open estuary extending immediately NNEwardly 8 miles broad open Gulf Fronting Luxor Harbor some distance distant
