Opelousas, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 884 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. The area now known as Opelousas was first settled by Caddo Indians in what is now southeastern Louisiana about 1800. English colonists began to arrive in significant numbers in the late 17th century and early 18th century, and Opelousas was founded on July 4, 1785 by Captain James Cook as HMS "Endymion". The town became a major trading center on the St. Bernard River due to its location near two salt mines and its access to shipping lanes. In 1804, General Andrew Jackson laid out a new district of Jefferson Parish called Jacksonborough which included most of modern-day Opelousas and parts of what are today Slidell and New Orleans. By 1830, however, development had begun to slowdown due to low commodity prices and immigration from Europe. With cotton becoming an important crop after American slavery ended in 1865, new demand for labor led many small businesses to close their doors during Reconstruction; monasteries also closed because they could not compete with large plantations hiring freedmen for wages that were often much higher than those paid by white merchants. However, Opelousas saw some growth following World War II as African Americans enlisted in armed service or took jobs available through government programs like Project VEILI (Vietnam Veterans Employment Insurance). Opelousas was founded in 1799 by General James Wilkinson. It became a parish in 1818 and was named for the Spanish Opelousa. The town was platted in 1824 and named for John B. Opel, a local landowner. The first post office opened in 1827. By 1860, the population had grown to 4,500 residents. In 1865, the United States acquired what is now Louisiana from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Civil War. As part of this treaty, Opelousas became an established U.S. city with voting rights and a seat on the city council. In 1907, it annexed neighboring Iberville Parish to form a single municipality with a population of over 100,000 people. The largest employer in Opelousas until 2003 was Dow Corning Rubber Company which employed over 1,400 workers at its location at 401 Neches Street from 1911 until 2003 when it closed down due to economic conditions within the rubber industry worldwide; however new businesses have started up since then including several health food stores and restaurants as well as an online store catering toOpelousan farmers markets
