Opelousas, Louisiana is a town located in the parish of Saint John the Baptist and the city of Thibodaux in central Louisiana. The population was 5,708 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Opelousas was founded by French colonists in 1718 as "Fort de la Pointe". In 1803, it became a seat of government for Plaquemines Parish and was chartered as a city on July 1, 1827. The name "Opelousas" comes from an early French term meaning "place where stones are found." The city experienced several periods of growth during its early years including one when it had a population of 25,000. However, by 1840 Opelousas' population had decreased to 2,500 due to lack of development and economic decline within southern Louisiana. The first post office opened in Opelousas on November 12, 1842; however mail service did not start until 1845 because Congress did not pass legislation allowing for mail delivery between New Orleans and other areas until after the American Civil War ended. During World War II, Opelousas served as both an airfield servicing all points east of Baton Rouge and also as a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp located adjacent to Fort Chaffin which housed over three thousand Japanese Americans who were held at what is now I-10 exit 344 near Lambertville. Iwo Jima Memorial Park: Located just northeast of downtown Opelousas off US 90 Business/US 9 exit 344 (former Iwo Jima Blvd.), this memorial park honours those who fought or died during World War II while serving with Japan's Imperial Army - more specifically Marines and sailors who died aboard ship or ashore in Battle for Okinawa (1941-1945). A walk begins at Iwo Jima Boulevard & Northbay Drive entrance off US 90 Business/US 9 exit 344 & continues around impressionist style Maze sculpture garden featuring quotes from Marines killed or wounded on Okinawa (including renowned author Jerry Pournelle). On arrival at visitor center turn right (southwest) into Naha Loop drive then left onto Iwo Jima Blvd., drive past two statues honoring fallen Marines - one depicting Funafuti Atakeyza wearing hisbc Uniform No 3A’s & another portraying Petty Officer First Class Hiroshi Kamiya VC recipient wearing his United States Naval Unit citation Ribbon #9041” before turning right back onto Iwo Jima Boulevard entrances visitors parking lot via loop driveway leading southward thru visitor center complex thence returning northward along same route

However, Opelousas retains its nickname "the most important port on the Mississippi" because it still remains the primary seaport for goods entering New Orleans from all directions including Mobile Bayou downriver

Opelousas was founded by General John Beck in 1728 as a trading post on the Red River for fur traders and other interests. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Gulf Railroad in 1885 and became an important transportation center for eastern Louisiana. In 1917, Opelousas participated in World War I as part of the Allies and was occupied by German troops until 1945. After independence from France in 1803, Opelousas served as the capital of Livingston Parish until 1840 when its capital moved to Baton Rouge.
