The history of New Orleans goes back to 1718 when French explorers from Acadia landed on what is now known as Bankhead Island and founded an établissement called Fort Royal which served as a trading post between France and its colonies in America. In 1754, King Louis XV issued a royal charter that designated New Orleans "the new capital" for Louisiana because it had been abandoned by Baton Rouge at the time that Baton Rouge was renamed Paris after France's victory over Britain in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered General James K. Polk to move his army eastward across Lake Pontchartrain to invade America; however, Polk Roads crossed Cooks Prairie before reaching New Orleans and destroyed much evidence leading up to Bonaparte's invasion plans. When Bonaparte returned from his exile at Boulogne with an army including 5500 men on April 24, 1804, he discovered that New Orleans had not been sacked and its inhabitants were still celebrating their freedom from occupation by American forces under General Andrew Jackson who had burned all vestiges of infrastructure associated with British rule two years earlier during their winter campaign against Napoleon III's French armies at Iberville Heights near Mobile Bayou (now part of Midtown Manhattan). On September 15th 1805 – Feast day of St John Baptist – Jackson marched into downtown with his entire command numbering 9300 soldiers supported by artillery engaging 1000 insurgents numbering only 50 mounted gunmen led by Captain Neil Armstrong who personally delivered cannonballs filled with grapeshot rounds through boarded windows into homes occupied by Loyalists without causing any injuries or fatalities - one such event which helped inspire American support for independence from Great Britain even though many Americans saw themselves as defenders of civilization against barbaric barbarians like Napoleon III! After almost 4 days battle Jackson retreated northeast along River Road towards Jefferson Barracks where he lost about 5000 troops killed or wounded plus 8000 horses & mules captured including more than 3000 cannons taken home with him! On October 12th 1805 Jackson finally withdrew westward across Mount Pleasant after putting within range several cannon batteries stationed atop Mount Carmel commanding access to Mr Moseley’s Harbor just upstream from today’s Old Metropole Theater which would become home to both Broadway theaters and also be used for launching torpedoes against Spanish warships off Cuba during World War II!
