In 1899, New Orleans passed a law requiring all handgun owners to carry a pistol outside of their homes. This helped spur demand forholsters from gunowners throughout the city, and made them one of New Orleans' most popular holster brands. In 1923, Holster & Knife Co., Inc., was founded in New Orleans by two brothers who had been involved in the leather industry since they were young children. By 1934, Holster & Knife had become one of America's leading holster manufacturers. The company continued to grow during World War II; during that time it produced more than 2 million pistols and revolvers (of which over half were exported to Europe). During the war years, Holster & Knife also produced armored cars and other military equipment. After the war ended, Holster & Knife continued to grow; by 1960 its products represented almost 50% of all handgun sales in America. In 1971-72,Holster & Knife merged with Colt Firearms Corp.; this merger created one of America's largest firearms companies - one that continues to produce high-quality handguns today.

When the revolver became popular in the United States, it was not by choice of law enforcement officers but as a result of compact design and availability of firearms that were chamber-fed. The first revolver was made in 1857 by Daniel Webster, an American politician and lawyer who served as the 25th U.S. president from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1861. He designed and developed what is now called the .45 Colt handgun which was chambered for the 6mm Remington cartridge. In 1865, Colt patented a new type of revolver known as the Model 1860 Army Revolver which used a new centerfire cartridge (6mm Remington) instead of the older .44 Colt cartridge. This allowed for a more efficient firing process with less noise and muzzle impact because each shot would detonate inside the breechblock rather than outside where it caused consistent damage to other firearms nearby. The popularity of revolvers led to their standardization across countries such as Australia (1887), Denmark (1893), France (1900), Germany (1904), Italy (1920), Russia (1924), Spain (1935) and Uruguay (1960). The Smith & Wesson Modelmaster series began production in 1911 using conversion kits allowing various pistols to be converted into revolvers including those produced by Sig Sauer AG., Beretta SIGMA,Walther P38/P220/P226 rifles and many others. The last mass-produced pistol in this series was manufactured by H&K GmbH., Heckler & Koch USA LLC., Glock Incorporated., Springfield Armory Corporation., Savage Arms Corporation., Caspian Firearms Corporation./Eagle Arms Company Ltd./Red Eagle Ammunition Incorporation in 2018
