The modern shotgun has its roots in the muzzle-loading rifle, which was first developed in 1793 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. A muzzleloader used a revolving cylinder with a round head that was fired from a cannon or musket. The early shotguns were designed to fire single rounds, and were called “pistols”. By 1836, however, shotgunners had realized that they could be used to fire multiple rounds at once using special barrels known as rifled barrels. Rifled barrels are made of different materials and have different shapes and sizes depending on their intended use. They are bored into the barrel for holding shot inside of it, making them more accurate and efficient than smooth bore barrels. This gave rise to the shotgun as one of the most versatile weapons in history. Gun barrels are made out of many different materials, such as metal, plastic, and composites. The material that is used to make a gun barrel depends on the type of gun and the purpose for which it will be used. Gun barrels can be either cylindrical or conical. They come in a variety of diameters, from 0.2 inches to .40 inches. The most common size for a barrel is the .22 caliber barrel. There are several factors that influence the shape of a barrel, including its diameter, sheer weight, 1) the bore axis (angle at which shots enter into the barrel), 2) whether it is designed to accept cartridges with different calibers (e.g., see “ cartridge types” below), 3) whether bullets have been pre-loaded into case heads before firing (see “ loading and unloading ammunition” below), 4)whether gas chambers are present in firearms (for airguns), 5)the type of firearm stock used (if any), 6)the angle at which fire must be aimed in order to hit targets at long range (or 6 degrees downrange if using iron sights). The first guns in New Orleans were small-caliber cannons used by the French and Spanish. The British also had small cannon in their forces at this time, but they did not take kindly to them being put into use by the French and took measures to try to remove them from the city. However, over time, as firearms became more common in France and Spain, both countries adopted smaller arms which New Orleanians could easily purchase. The early handguns that were used in New Orleans were made of brass or other soft metals and would have been fired with a shot gun or rifle. As handguns became more popular, gun barrels began to be made of hardwood instead of brass for reasons unknown. It is likely that this was due to insurance rates increasing in the city after Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005. Hardwood barrel manufacturing became more common as a result of this event as well because panes of glass are much harder than brass or other metals when shattered. New Orleans was one of the few American cities that experienced rapid growth during the 18th century; however, it also saw some significant technological advancements. Cannonball rifles (or "bouquiniers") were developed here during this time which allowed firing projectiles up to 100 yards without having to reloading; this technology helped make artillery much more efficient than it had ever been before. Additionally, New Orleanians played an important role in helping spread westernization throughout Louisiana during this time period by teaching Europeans how to live and operate in Louisiana's unique culture and society.

The Battle of Baton Rouge took place on November 5, 1812 near present-day Baton Rouge when Major General James Kenedy attacked Napoleon Bonaparte’s army under Pierre Charles Lescot with 8800 French soldiers led by Generals Lafayette and De Witt Clinton under covering fire from within Commission Street jail while more than 7000 Native Americans were also fighting on either side. Many people died as result of this battle which ended with Bonaparte's retreat into Mexico City before he could be captured or killed
