In 1851 local resident Otto Pellerin chartered the first post office in what would become known as New Iberia; this establishment served until 1903 when it was moved to Metairie and renamed Post Office Park. In 1865, due to its location on the banks of the Mississippi River near present-day Baton Rouge, New Iberia quickly became one of America's most important river towns with merchants and officials trading with both Europe and Africa for goods crossing the mighty river. In 1870 businessman Augustus Heckscher donated land north of downtown for use as a municipal park which later became known as Heckscher Park (named after him). The influx of new immigrants following World War II also led to growth within downtown New IBERIA; by 1970 nearly all storefronts had been renovated or replaced since they were built during prohibition decades earlier! Today approximately 60% of all businesses located inside Downtown business district areowned by individuals/families – making it one of Orleans Parish’s more entrepreneurial districts! Additionally notable properties located near Downtown include: Stroud Hall Mansion (a former plantation house), English Gothic Revival styled Beaux Arts courthouse (built 1935), several blocks east along Airline Highway extends First Baptist Church – one block south along French Road which houses over 100 historical residences dating back to pre-Civil War days…the Clarendon Hotel & Casino across Interstate 10 from downtown offers some dramatic views overlooking Lake Pontchartrain…and numerous other fine Georgian Revival style buildings dotting large portions OF central business district today including: Christmastime parades through streets lined with eggnog stands throughout entire district every December; annual "Cajun Festival" held at Hammond’s Lakefront Business Center featuring live music from various bands each day from late October through early November complete with carnival games & rides; highly rated Saint John’s Episcopal Cathedral remodeled by renowned African American architect David Childers into an elegant Classical style cathedral completed in 2008 provides beautiful settings for religious services each week morning & evening; numerous restaurants offer excellent food options year-round within walking distance including several Roman Catholic locations such as Our Lady Of Good Counsel church on Veterans Boulevard adjacent to Opelousas High School…and countless others! New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Louisiana. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in Louisiana and has been around for over 350 years. The community was originally named "Iberia" after Spain's Iberian Peninsula. When American settlers arrived in what is now New Iberia Parish in 1802, they called it "St. John's Parish." The first white settler to arrive in what is now New Iberia Parish was James Houston on May 10, 1802. Houston was part of a small group of 11 men who journeyed from Texas via the Camino Real to settle in what is now New Orleans County, Louisiana. After landing at Jardin de la Terre (now Baton Rouge), they built a cabin near present-day downtown New Iberia and began trading with Native Americans. In 1815, Spanish explorer Manuel 1er de Campo discovered new land west of Mobile Bay that would become Baton Rouge Parish when he sailed into the bay on his return trip from Mexico City. On July 24, 1815, Campo landed at an island off present-day Naval Station Monroe and named it Isla del Carmen after his wife Carmen Alcantara de la Cueva y Sotomayor (1793-1865). Soon thereafter, other Spanish explorers discovered additional landmass to the east which would later be known as Louisiana Purchase lands: much of today's Acadiana region including Baton Rouge and Alexandria were included within this original area discovery by Champlain et al.. On December 12, 1836 – two years after President Andrew Jackson signed the Treaty of Moultrie – General Robert Ewell established Fort Donelson on an island near modern day Stroudsburg Landing for Confederate forces during their Battle Of Fort Donelson against Union troops under Ulysses S Grant. The fort served as a supply depot and headquarters for Confederate forces until Union forces took it over on February 15th 1865 following Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's march through Alabama to Chennaiport Plantation where he destroyed many Confederate cannons prior to his march into northern Mississippi.. In 1898 Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage to parts of southeastern Louisiana such as Natchitoches Parish which includes present day New Orleans and forced most people living there into temporary homes or evacuation areas pending cleanup efforts that lasted weeks or even months according to some reports while others claim just days or weeks elapsed before all residents had returned home although there are no records verifying this claim... In 1939 Hurricane Betsy completely destroyed downtown Jaxsonville along with most of its buildings leaving only foundations remaining today mostly covered by tall grasses which provide limited viewable surface activity... In 1951 Hurricane Deshae struck eastern Lafourche Parish causing significant destruction both north and south of Lake Pontchartrain with half of Jena plantation lost including more than 100 slaves who were auctioned off during that period... Finally Katrina struck Gulfport/Biloxi on August 29th 2005 resulting in catastrophic damage across both coasts particularly to Biloxi which saw more than $100 million worth of damage done with nearly 90% loss suffered inside city limits alone... Rebuilding operations finally began about two years later with completion date TBD but have yet to reach halfway point due largely to funding issues related primarilyto state government budget sequestration... As recently as September 2018 almost all physical infrastructure within incorporated limits including schools & hospitals still remains largely behind schedule while also facing continuedbudget cuts throughout current fiscal year impacting service levels greatly)... As previously noted approximately 60% percent (based upon 2017 data)of locally employed workforce still remains unemployed making conditions ripe for increased crime rates should any further joblessness occur... With such meager resources available local governments have struggled heavily both politically and financially Additionally there remain serious long term infrastructure needs including those affecting drinking water & wastewater systems etc.,allowing crime rates overall continue rising albeit somewhat slowly
