New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of St. Tammany in the unincorporated community of Center Point on the levee system south of New Orleans. In 1819, Daniel DeSoto explored and named this area La Salle because he thought it resembled Spain's oldest city, Seville (sources differ on whether DeSoto called it Spanish or Portuguese La Salle). A post office was established at La Salle in 1827; its name may have been inspired by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's visit to that area two years earlier. When Louisiana was admitted into the United States as an official state on August 29, 1803, much of what is now La Salle Parish including parts of New Iberia were included within Rapides Parish until that parish was organized into seven parishes – Acadiana (including most of New Iberia), East Baton Rouge Parish (including Bastrop), Jefferson Davis Parish (including Alexandria), Port Arthur Municipal Airport Authority - includes present day New Iberia/Laurel Canyon/Cascade Heights/Bossier City/Fort Worth Municipal Airport, Orleans Parish - all comprising portions then Of Rapides Parish - while also including Block Island which later became part of St

New Iberia, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 29,627 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in America and has been inhabited for more than two thousand years. The first European to visit what is now New Iberia was Jean Lafitte on October 27, 1769. Lafitte and his party explored present-day Orleans Parish before sailing northward along the Mississippi River. On November 3rd of that year they arrived at the current site of New Iberia, which they named La Rochelle after their original discovery there. The early French colonists who settled in Louisiana were quite different from those who settled in Canada or Massachusetts Bay. France was a land power with great resources and had few constraints on its expansionism so it became an important player in North American history. The French were motivated by colonization and trade reasons rather than religious beliefs which led to some of the earliest Christian conversions in North America. For example, Francois Xavier de Laclède founded a mission at Natchitoches (now part of Metairie) in 1699 which served as a base from which missionaries proselytized among various Native American groups including the Algonquins, Chickasaws, Choctaws and Kiowas. By 1700 there were over fifty missions operating throughout Acadiana (the area now comprising eastern Louisiana) with about two hundred converts baptized each month! In contrast, English colonists tended to come from areas such as London or Plymouth where religious fervor was less pronounced and conversions were more sporadic. The first successful French effort to colonize what is now Louisiana occurred when Claude Monet sailed across Lake Pontchartrain on July 20th, 1803 aboard the USS Constitution under command of Commodore Samuel Lockwood Jr.. After landing near Opelousas on August 4th he established Fort Chartres without firing any shots! Although this failed to establish permanent French settlement within present day Jefferson Parish it did result in numerous fur trader profits being accumulated by traders working out of nearby Mobile (Ala). It should be noted that whileLockwood’s enterprise played an important role in developing post-Katrina Louisiana residents generally view him as an hero due to his actions during Hurricane Katrina! In 1804 Gabriel Valdez founded Galveston Island off Galveston Bay which became an important center for cotton smuggling during antebellum times because it offered smugglers easy access to both international markets and Ulysses S Grant’s army besieging Mexico City! In 1845 Robert E Lee Siegered Baton Rouge resulting in extensive damage done to city infrastructure including loss of life & property etcetera thus fortifying Confederate forces against Union attacks until 1865 when General Ulysses S Grant came ashore!!!!!! This event helped solidifyLouisiana’s reputation as a key crossroads on the Gulf Coast between South America & North America!!! It wasn’t until after World War II that New Iberia began experiencing significant growth thanks largely to oil exploration activities conducted by local entrepreneur Lamar Hunt Sr.. Hunt started work on drilling into wellbores at Anadarko Field near present day Thibodaux shortly after Vichy France capitulated following WWII!!!!! Hunt developed Anadarko Oil Sands into one of the world’s largest oil reserves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! priorTo Katrina !!!!!
New Iberia was founded in 1814 by General James K. Polk and Andrew Jackson as the site of a new military post on the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important commercial center for the region. In 1836, New Iberia became the seat of government for Claiborne Parish and it remained this role until 1885, when Orleans Parish was created from parts of Claiborne and Lafourche parishes. The city grew rapidly during Reconstruction, reaching its peak in the late 19th century before declining sharply in the 20th century. New Iberia has since regained some of its former prominence as a hub for business and industry.
