In 1798, French forces invaded Louisiana under General Blount and discovered cannons being transported downriver from Mobile Alabama for use along the Mississippi River. The Frenchmen quickly seized these cannons and put them into use within their own army as well as against British forces. New Iberia was founded in 1795 by Major Pierre-Louis Cimier as an outpost on what is now known as Bayou Teche. The town quickly grew around its military capabilities and soon became a center for trade with both Native Americans and Spanish colonists living in what is now southeastern Louisiana. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson invaded nearby Texas and landed his army at New Orleans before moving northward towards Mobile Bayou which he hoped would fall into his hands given its strategic location between Spain’s Old Mexico Territory (now Mexico City) to the south, British Canada to the north, Tennesseeessee Borders – including present day Memphis – to the east, Arkansas Province (present day Arkansas) to the southeast, and Missouri Territory (present day Missouri) to the northwest. After some fierce fighting that month near San Antonio de Bexar County in Texas), Jackson decided not pursue further into Texas but turned instead towards Mobile Bayou where he planned to besiege Spanish Fort San Felipe de Llano until Tarrant's cavalry arrived from Austin on July 7th reinforcements could arrive or Santa Anna could cross overland from Veracruz with relief force able then To retake control of western Texas such As happened; however Mexican Army blockaded US coast n rendering port available only for American ships operating out of Port Hudson; with no other means of entry or exit than through navy blockade In order for Jackson's army commanders situated along southwestern Louisiana & adjacent areas including New Iberia (& adjacent parishes) better understand their enemy's movements they ordered Captain John Davenport commanding Confederate Naval Squadron anchored offshore at Pointe Coupee on April 12th 1861 while Lieutenant James Waddell commanded USS Illinois moored opposite Pointe Coupee Commander included orders "Keep station 24 hours ready open fire upon any vessels observed" USS Illinois when approached opened fire upon her opponent Midshipman Samuel Purdy reported "fired two shots". Naval Squadron was engaging vessel CSS Alabama whenwhilst CSS Alabama was firing upon Naval Squadron Commander ordered ship CSS Florida"to ceasefire" Commodore Hartsfield sent reinforcement party consisting of 5 boats under command Lieutenant Samuel Fenton & 2nd lieutenant George Pogue ashore assisted by Ensign John Aiken who boarded CSS Alabama after she ceased fire Shortly thereafter Commodore Hartsfield ordered all ships except USS Kentucky evacuated Monroe also evacuated CSS Kentucky due unknown reason later learned it was because OFV Ascension had been sunk days earlier while transporting supplies ammunition troops & stores up river following battle HMS Euryalus collided with SS Constitution off Galveston Island resulting in loss of life & $5 million worth of cargo latter renamed SS Constitution Arkport during Scrappy season USS Louisville reached Port Hudson just in time too evacuate same personnel plus guns etc.. transports goods Contrabandiste squadron prisoners= 100% Yankee
New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in the eastern portion of the state of Louisiana. The population was 5,145 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is one of the most rural areas in southern Louisiana and is bordered by Jefferson Parish to the east and north, Hammond Parish to the west and south, Rapides Parish to the southwest, and St. Bernard Parish to the northwest. The area that would become New Iberia was first settled in 1718 by French traders from Quebec. The town was named for Jean-Baptiste de la Nouvelle-Ibérie (1685-1744), a member of an early French settlement in what is now Mississippi Territory who founded a trading post on Bayou Teche near present day Baton Rouge. In 1736, Pierre Louis L’Islet (1710-1783), an Indian trader who had also traded fur with Native Americans near Mobile Bayous since 1727, established a permanent French community at Natchitoches on tributary of Old Saint John River about five miles northeast of present day New Iberia. From this settlement began what would be known as La Nouvelle-Ibérie commercial region which included much of southeastern Louisiana and parts of Alabama and Tennessee until it became part of Spanish Florida in 1821. In 1803, during Napoleon Bonaparte's War with Great Britain over control of North America, General James Wilkinson decided to abandon Baton Rouge for new military installation called Prairie du Chien (later Fort Pike) on Red River just east of present day Baton Rouge; this decision would have serious consequences because it left Baton Rouge open to attack by British forces while giving them control over easily accessible resources within Orleans Parish including sugar cane plantations outside Baton Rouge proper. It wasn't until after Wilkinson's aborted establishment that people started settling around Bayou Teche where La Nouvela-Ibérie now stands; these early settlers were among those who built or rebuilt several nineteenth century cotton plantations including: Echols Cotton plantation(covered below), Thibodaux Plantation(now Metairie), Nicholas Plantation(now Chalmette), Claiborne Cotton plantation(now Bel Air) As time passed more people came into La Nouvela-Ibérie looking for opportunities outside their traditional cotton farming activities; some became lawyers, doctors etc.; others formed businesses such as juries trust companies or storekeepers etc.; still others developed heavy industry such as shipbuilding etc.. In 1905 Drury Wagon Works Company was founded here by Jules Drury with production shifting from Democrat Street parent company Armour Manufacturing Company facilities in downtown Chicago Heights through its subsidiary Drury Wagon Works Incorporated heretofore owned by stenographers Charles Fenton & Brothers . At its peak production capacity C&F Paper Products warehouse produced up to two hundred thousand pieces per week using fiftythree different machines! Today only seven buildings remain standing from original twenty foursome homes which were constructed between 1905 and 1917 when oil prices collapsed due to World War 1 economic conditions Many residentsigrated out during prohibition period but many locals still live close enough so they are able to visit various times each year The paper mill closed down circa 2006 but local historians continue collections work there today
