New Iberia, Louisiana is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is located on the Mississippi River and it is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what became New Iberia was made by French colonists who arrived in 1719. The original name of the town was "Iberville", which means "Island" or "Island Settlement". After some time, the colony's administrators decided to change their title to "New Iberia". In 1785, Colonel John Stillwell founded a new military post called Fort St. Johns on an island near present-day New Iberia. This fort served as a base for slave traders and helped develop the area around it into one of the most significant cotton plantations in Louisiana. In 1809, General James Kenedy moved his army from Mobile Bay to Corpus Christi and set out for New Orleans with orders to suppress Native American raids along both banks of the Mississippi River. On October 3rd he reached Baton Rouge and established his headquarters at Fort St. John before moving upstream towards Prairie du Chien where he planned to block Indian migration across Lake Michigan into Illinois through that territory. After weeks of fruitless travel Kenedy abandoned his plans when he learned that Governor Doniphan had already sent reinforcements northward to meet him at Prairie du Chien; this move effectively destroyed any hope of success against Kenedy and authorized Doniphan's decision not to pursue him further southward into Illinois after all (the only other Confederate attempt at crossing the river). After several years spent building up its infrastructure, New Iberia formally incorporated as a city on April 1st 1841 under charter from France with its current name being chosen because it resembled more closely French phrases such as "Le Nouveau Orleñais" which mean "The new Orleans". At first few residents chose to move there because they found little opportunity for economic development outside of Baton Rouge; however over time this changed as businesses started opening up around town about railway connections (particularly those linking Baton Rouge with points west) and suburban growth began becoming available in eastern Rapides Parish due west of town limits: these developments led eventually to an exponential increase in population growth within municipal boundaries during subsequent decades until well into the 20th century when rapids erosion graduallyBeginning circa 1915 Kingsbury Bridge Road access limited residential growth even more than downtown while Interstate 10 running parallel directly through district restricted commercial activity

During the 20th century, New Iberia experienced significant industrial development as a result of its proximity to Gulfport and Biloxi; however, economic decline has recently led tosignificant crime rates and difficulties accessing basic services such as health care and education. Despite these challenges, New Iberia remains an important community with rich African American history that is home to several large businesses including Sears Holdings Companies (SHLD) and FedEx Corporation (FED).
New Iberia was founded in 1804 by James Wilkinson and his wife, Margaret. The town was named for Iberville Parish in Louisiana, which Wilkinson had recently vacated to establish New Orleans. In 1835, the city of New Orleans was founded by Claiborne Jackson and W. P. Marshall, both of whom were natives of Alabama. Wilkinson's heirs sold the town to the city in 1845 for $1 million dollars. In 1840, a group of English-born entrepreneurs established a cotton plantation near New Iberia called "The Gilded Age." The enterprise failed due to overproduction and competition from American plantations; however, it left a lasting impact on New Iberia's culture and economy.
