New Iberia is a small town in northwestern Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,811 as of the 2010 census. New Iberia is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and its namesake river, Iberia. New Iberia was founded in 1814 by French colonists who had landed on what is now Baton Rouge. A post office was established in 1827, and growth at the local level continued through the 1830s when a group of Germans arrived and began to build homes. In 1840, three brothers from Hamburg named Wilhelm Kappelmeyer purchased land east of downtown for $1 per acre ($30 total). They called their new settlement "New Iberia". The first settlers were men who had emigrated to Louisiana from Germany: Auguste Berger (1804-1868), Friedrich Rieger (1800-1877), and Wilhelm Kappelmeyer (1807-1881). All four men were farmers with experience in southern Germany; they brought with them materials they needed to build their homes: logs and bricks, which they built with their own hands using local sandstone quarries. The success of these early settlers led to more people coming overland over time as transportation became easier and more affordable. In 1846 New Iberia became a parish under Roman Catholic jurisdiction; it would be joined by neighboring Ascension Parish in 1865. By 1870 there were 2,000 residents living in what is now New Iberia Parish—nearly all descendants of those original pioneers who had settled here during the 1830s and 1840s. "It [the community] grew slowly but steadily until white flight accelerated after World War II." According to historian Claude Steele Mandeville Jr., "a cluster of immigrants arrived after World War II seeking work opportunities that never materialized" because many Japanese Americans were interned during that time period without any charges being filed against them. Consequently, most businesses closed or relocated during this time frame while many native-born citizens left for better economic prospects elsewhere within the United States or abroad.MandevilleC After World War II ended many natives returned home but "White flight accelerated after World War II", leading to an dwindling population size by 1960. By 2000 only about 100 people still lived in New Iberia. Today's population stands at around 6500 residents making it one of the fastest growing communities within Orleans Parish.

New Iberia, Louisiana is a town in the parish of New Iberia and the independent city of Thibodaux in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. The French founded New Iberia on May 5, 1718 after landing on the present-day banks of the Mississippi River as part of their attempt to establish a colony in what is now Acadiana. In 1803, following Napoleon's invasion of Mobile Bay, General James Wilkinson ordered Major General Andrew Jackson to march into Acadiana and conquer it by force if necessary. After making landfall on May 3rd at what is now called Camden Landing on Banks Street off US 90 just upstream from where the old Fort Tarrant was built during Spanish colonial times, Jackson set up camp for his troops at what is now known as State House Square. On that day Lafayette landed his forces opposite Greenbrier Ferry downstream from where Wilkinson's forces were stationed and began an attack against Jackson's columns which had taken up position along Duck Creek about two miles east of present-day Baton Rouge. The battle ended with a Confederate victory as Colonel John Ralston’s brigade under Lieutenant Colonel James Kenedy attackedJackson’s flank while Colonel Thomas Jealous’ brigade protected Jackson’s rear flank; this engagement resulted in severe losses for both sides with over 50 casualties amongJackson’s command alone).On July 11th 1803 james Wilkinson sailed downriver from Baton Rouge with 900 men (99% American)to establish Nouvelle Iberie across Lake Pontchartrain north of New Orleans; however within 2 weeksof disembarking here he discovered that no land had been available to him so he returned back upstream to Baton Rouge via La Salle Bridge before marching rejoining Jackson Oct 20th 1803 near its current site; despite this setback NIPA was successfully establishedJAMES WILKINSON becoming first Governor Of Louisiana - Source: History Channel
New Iberia was founded in 1815 by the brother of General James K. Polk, and grew rapidly due to its location on an open waterway between the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River. The town became a major shipping center for cotton, sugar cane, and other goods transported around the Louisiana Purchase. In 1849, New Iberia was renamed Washington Parish after President James K. Polk. The parish also included parts of what is now Baton Rouge and Houma City before they were annexed into New Iberia in 1871.
