New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Baton Rouge, on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. It is the sister town to Shreveport. New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in central Louisiana. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. New Iberia has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was founded as a trading post by Frenchmen and Creoles. It became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the antebellum period. After the Civil War, New Iberia grew rapidly as a result of its infrastructure and commerce. In recent years, however, economic growth has caused some residents to leave for more vibrant communities in surrounding counties. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now New Iberia were Native Americans who lived in present-day Rapides Parish before moving eastward over time into what is now Jefferson Parish. In 1715, French traders arrived in New Iberia Bay and began trading with local tribes such as the Houma Indians. By 1748, French colonists had built Fort Natchitoches on the north side of bayou Teche near present-day Old Bridge Road and Stroud Drive. Over time, Natchitoches evolved into one of France's most important fur trade posts due to its strategic location overlooking Rapides River and access to nearby markets. In 1803, Spain acquired control of Louisiana from France following their war for independence from that country. Spanish colonists began settling in what is now New Orleans immediately following their arrival; however, few permanent European settlers moved to New Iberia because it lacked any natural resources or fertile land suitable for farming. Instead, many new Europeans settled here through legal purchases or via forced relocation after Battle of Baton Rouge (1813). These newcomers included Scots-Irish immigrants who worked extensively in sugar cane plantations around Baton Rouge until 1840; Germans who came to work on riverboats until 1848; Italians who operated coffee plantations until 1861; Poles who arrived between 1863 and 1867; and Russian Jews who had come ashore during World War II prior to being shipped inland aboard ships escorted by American forces under General Douglas MacArthur's command when they landed at Port Arthur on May 8th,. The majority of these newcomers were Catholic refugees from Ireland and Germany although there were also Protestant refugees from Austria-Hungary and Poland among them. Many natives unable or unwilling to commute far enough for agriculture found employment doing menial tasks related to white settlement such as picking fruit or shoveling snow off roofs while others engaged in carpentry or manufacturing goods that could be exported outside Louisiana but not bought within that state.. Eventually most residents chose not to relocate further away from major cities – except for those actually affected by white supremacist violence - opting instead for slowerpaced social stability within close proximity rather than upheaval downriver..
