New Iberia, Louisiana is a town in the parish of Ascension and the city of New Orleans. The population was 8,779 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Mississippi River east of Baton Rouge. The first European to sight what would later be called New Iberia was Captain John Smith on November 29, 1699 when he anchored off its mouth for passage to Spanish Louisiana. In 1718, French explorer and military officer Nicolas-Jacques Conte landed here from Fort Beaux with his army after raiding Mobile Bayou. He named it "Iberia" for his homeland in France. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Spain's Louisiana colony along the Mississippi River while British forces defended Pensacola against American attacks from that side. During this time period, much of present-day Iberia County was located within today's Ascension Parish west of Baton Rouge or within today's Claiborne Parish east of Baton Rouge. On December 12th, 1803 Jackson discovered what became known as Jackson Lake which lay southwest of present day downtown New Iberia; this area now includes portions of Chalmette and Metairie parishes north and east of downtown New Orleans respectively On January 6th, 1804 General Wilkinson attackedJackson's advancing army at Lakeshore Creek near present day Chalmette before reaching Baton Rouge where he surrendered onJanuary 10th to General Bragg who had arrived from Alabama just days earlier with an additional 3,000 men including 5 cannons! Aftermath: After retreating through Mobile Bayou following a two week siege by United States forces under Major Donelson (the first major battle fought in America), General Wilkinson burned all but 400 buildings in New Iberia before withdrawing back across Mobile Bayou to Pensacola on February 15th! By 1800 most plantations were abandoned due to lack Of fertile land or disease brought over by earlier settlers/workers during their military campaigns in south Louisiana during antebellum times The only Hardship experienced during early history Of rice production occurred when Hurricane Katrina destroyed many inland wetlands used for rice cultivation making up almost half of original acreage irrigated circa 2005 There are several stories circulating about how Rice production resumed post Katrina If true then Rice may have been grown on some old plantation sites still extant Although not contiguous with pre-Katrina areas there is evidence that these sites may have once formed a contiguous agricultural system producing approximately 350 metric tons per year prior to Katrina

New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Ascension, La., in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is one of the oldest settlements in what is now southeastern Louisiana. It was founded by French colonists in 1718 as a trading post on the mouth of the Red River. The first Spanish settlement in what is now southeastern Louisiana was San Felipe de Eboli, established in 1527 by Hernando de Soto and his expedition under Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. In 1692, Spanish colonists founded San Antonio de la Laguna on an island near modern-day Lafayette, Ind., which becamethe capital of Spanish Louisiana after France ceded it to Spain following its victory over Dutch forces at the Battle of Baton Rouge (1693). In 1815, after American troops destroyed all but a few buildings of Fort Moultrie during their campaign against Mexico City's Mexican garrison at that point known as "The Siege of New Orleans," General Andrew Jackson ordered Major General John C. Neumann to build FortJackson onWHarton Island adjacent to New Orleans Harbor for military use only and returned to Memphis for winter quarters. On December 12, 1815 Jackson sailed from Memphis with 2d US Infantry Regiment under Captain James Fenton Canby for Pensacola Bay where he arrived on December 16th intending to take possession of Pensacola Bay and Mobile Bay but found that Admiral James Fitzjames Buchanan had blockaded those ports. Canby left Jackson with two companies to blockade Mobile Bay while he took possession of Pensacola Bay on December 20th when Buchanan surrendered without battle andMobileBay became JacksonvilleBay effective January 10th 1816 pursuant to an document called An Act for Regulating Commerce with Cuba - second Session (1816). New Iberia began civic life when Drury erected a schoolhouse on current-day Stroud Street about 1790. A new courthouse was built between 1828 and 1830 replacing an earlier structure burned down by pirates while captured off Havana in 1800.. The old courthouse served as both court house and jail until 1901 when it was replaced by a more recent building that still stands today In 1840s many freedmen settled around present day New Iberia including David Coffee who started coffee plantation east side bayou near present day University Lawn Drive The Coffee family continued operations until 1990s
