In 1954, local businessmen formed a group that developed an area that would become known as New Iberia proper. That year saw the opening of Central High School which served as one of the first public schools in Louisiana City Limits Park District #1 (now known as Central State University). In 1957, Lafayette’s first municipal election resulted in the creation of two independent municipalities: South Lafourche Parish (now St John’s Parish) on its west bank and North Lafourche Parish on its east bank; these were later combined into one municipality under La Salle Mayor Harry Bourgeois Jr., who served until 1984 when he was elected governor for a single term.[1] New Iberia grew rapidly during World War II due to wartime production shortages caused by then-President Franklin D Roosevelt's decision not to build any new plants producing munitions vital for European allies during World War II.[2] As a result, many business owners who had fled war-torn Europe came home to start their own businesses in what became known as "The Big Easy".[3] This period also saw great development within music industry with Paramount Records founder Vee Jay recording some hits here such as “I Can't Quit You Baby”[4]and “All That She Wants”,[5] while Elvis Presley made his only live appearance at this location when he opened up Beale Street Grill & Five Spot Loungeheretofore unrecorded performances
It has been said that the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) ownership of WGN in Chicago was a turning point in American television. New Iberia was established in 1827 as a slave trading post on the Mississippi River. New Iberia is a city in the parish of Thibodaux, Louisiana, United States. The population was 17,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lafourche Parish. New Iberia is located on the banks of the river Iberia. The old town was founded by French colonists in 1803 and quickly became a center for trade and commerce on the lower Mississippi River. New Iberia was renamed for Pierre Charles Lesage, Comte de la Nouvelle-Iberie in 1827 after he won control of part of what is now Lafourche Parish from Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican Revolution. During World War II, New Iberia became known as "The munitions plant that saved Louisiana" because it produced more than two million pounds (1,400 metric tons) of munitions for Allied forces. In 1951, new Interstate 10 was built through Lafourche Parish and New Iberia became an access point for motorists heading east to Baton Rouge and west to Shreveport. In 1957, New Iberia achieved national prominence when it hosted Earth Day celebrations which were watched by over 150 million people around the world on television and radio. The event also resulted in creation of a local ecology organization called Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Aquatiques du Lac St.-Johns (CERLASJ). In 1978, Mayor James Meeks announced plans to build a new $100 million civic center which would serve as both an economic development tool and cultural destination for New Iberia residents and visitors alike. Construction began on the complex in 1983 but completed only eight years later due to financial difficulties brought about by an recession throughout Louisiana at that time. After being closed for several months due to budget overruns,the arena reopened in 2009 with a face lift that increased its seating capacity from 8,500 to 12,000 spectators; it remains one of LA's largest indoor arenas today. In 2017 they announced plans to demolish most if not all downtown buildings including most of their namesake's brick courthouse/town hall complex which had been existing since before Reconstruction era when African Americans took up land hereabouts - removing one example of social progress made in recent decades while simultaneously damaging or disabling many others across town while having no impact whatsoever on crime rates or economy!
