New Iberia, Louisiana is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the seat of Rapides Parish. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census, ranking it as the fifteenth-largest city in Louisiana. New Iberia is part of the Baton Rouge–LaPlace Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the New Orleans–Metairie Combined Statistical Area. The first settlement in present-day New Iberia date back to 1814 when a group of French colonists founded what would become Rapides Parish on land that they had claimed from Spain. They named their new town Nouvelle Iberia after King Louis XVIII of France following his coronation at Estates-General in 1792. New Iberia grew rapidly during Reconstruction following America's civil war (1865-1877). The community was founded by white laborers who were brought over from Mobile and Alabama for work on plantations then housed east of Lake Pontchartrain on what is now known as East Side Street and West Side Road. In 1875, General John Jumper transferred 5,000 acres (2 km2) to Rapides Parish within 24 months of its establishment as a result of his efforts to reintegrate black Americans into society following their paddy wagon ride through Paris during those years' Redeemer's Day celebration celebrations honoring American freedom fighters such as Andrew Johnson and Abraham Lincoln. By 1890, New Iberia had an estimated population of 25,000 people and became one of America's "peripheral slave states." However, with cotton prices falling throughout most southern countries during this time period due to worldwide competition from northern mills, textile production began to decline rapidly in Louisiana beginning in 1915 and continuing until the late 1920s; however, it slowly revived throughout World War II after air raid shelters were built around Louisiana cities like New Orleans.) In 1924 Frenchman Ernest Beauregard organized a group including many former Confederate officers called "The Knights Templar" which declared secession from the United States because they felt that Reconstruction had been unfair to them both socially and politically; Beauregard later served as military governor of Mali (northwest Africa) before achieving national power within African American politics under President Woodrow Wilson's Executive Order 9981 which placed racial segregationist restrictions upon African Americans serving in government jobs throughout much of America--the order was rescinded less than two weeks later upon Wilson's death without any clear successor plan or strategy.(See: Edwin Edwards: A Life ($25), page 298) Apostate priests affiliated with Opus Dei moved into Old Spanish Village circa 1925 while construction was underway for St Dominic School across the street; parishioners soon began referring to themselves informally as "The Black Brothers." The Kid made his way across Colorado after winning an election as sheriff of Lincoln County using gunfire and violence against law enforcement officers and civilians alike. This event has been called “the bloodiest day in American history” because it resulted in more than 50 deaths and over 200 injuries.[1] The popularity of handguns has also led to incidents where people have been killed or injured when their firearms were mishandled or broken into while they were unattended. One such incident occurred in 1994 when two employees at a convenience store near Wichita Falls, Texas were shot dead while trying to disarm an intruder armed with a shotgun who had broken into the business.][2]

The Hulls were successful farmers who developed a cotton gin and other land holdings that allowed them to become one of Louisiana's most prominent families. In 1814, New Iberia became part of the Orleans Parish government, which gave it more autonomy than other plantations. The Hulls Continued to be influential through their political connections and their ownership of large tracts of land in both Louisiana and Texas. They also contributed significantly to the development of modern Louisiana culture.
