The plantation grew rapidly during the 1840s as more slaves were added to the workforce; by 1850 Bushnells Station held over 150 slaves. In 1861–1865 both Confederate and Union soldiers garrisoned here for several months during the American Civil War; many of these men were from nearby Jackson County who made use of this small town as a base of operations while war raged elsewhere in America. New Iberia is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,647 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–St. Bernard Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Iberia was founded by the Covingtons in 1765 as a small trading post on the trade route between Baton Rouge and Mobile. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River just upstream from what would become New Orleans. In 1804, Iberia became an incorporated city after voters approved a charter that granted city status to every parish with a population over 1,000 residents. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded Louisiana and defeated French forces at the Battle of New Orleans and took control of much of southern Louisiana including Iberia Parish. The Covingtons were able to keep their holdings until they were sold to speculators in 1821 who abandoned the town and it fell into disrepair for many years before it was purchased by businessman John Nicholson in 1955 and restored as a tourist destination known today as "New Iberia".
