Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant fought a battle that lasted for three days. A total of 620 people were killed or wounded during the battle. In 1934, Louisiana statehood created an additional police department called the State Police Department which functioned as a firearms registry and security force for government buildings across the state. In 1968, New Iberia became an incorporated city with its own police department which still functions today as their primary law enforcement agency outside of parish jurisdiction

New Iberia is a city in the parish of Jefferson in Louisiana. The population was 5,683 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Jefferson Parish and part of New Orleans metropolitan area. The name "New Iberia" is from Spanish meaning "new land." The first people to live in what is now New Iberia were Native American traders who arrived there in the early 17th century. They called the area "Nueces," which means " navigable bay." By 1800, French colonists had moved into what is now New Iberia and began making land grants to their Indian allies. In 1802, General James Kenedy founded the town of Kenedyville on land grant from Pierre Laclau de Chouteau. Kenedyville was named for General James Kenedy, who fought against Spanish forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1806, Governor Claiborne Pell issued a proclamation calling for settlers to come to what is now New Iberia to help improve navigation on navigation rivers flowing through Acadiana (now Louisiana). On July 5, 1807, more than 100 men and women set out from Pointe Coupee amicably agreed not to war with each other after an altercation over fishing rights near present day Baton Rouge
