The first firearms in New Iberia were handguns. The first pistols were built by Captain John J. Wagoner and Lieutenant Elisha Scott of the Louisiana Militia on November 8, 1805. These handguns were called “Wagoner’s Pistol” and they were used by militia officers to protect themselves from possible attack. In 1814, Captain James Bledsoe began building rifles at his farmstead in present-day New Iberia. This rifle was different than any other firearm at that time because it had aidel barrels which made it easier to shoot Bullets out of a barrel with accuracy. This rifle was also called the “Bledsoe Rifle” becauseCaptain James Bledsoe founded the town of Bledsoe in what is now Livingston Parish, Louisiana, in 1814. In 1827, Major General Claiborne Jackson moved westward from Mobile Bay and arrived at what is now Slidell about three miles south of present-day New Iberia. He encountered many Indian raids near Baton Rouge so he ordered his troops to arm with cannons and muskets instead of handguns or rifles for protection against these attacks. However, this decision did not last long because soon after General Jackson left Slidell he found himself besieged by British forces at the Battle of Lake Charles on July 9, 1828 while attempting to retreat from this battle following an unsuccessful attempt to retake Mobile Bay (see Battle of Lake Charles). At this point Captain Lewis Armistead decided to take up arms against the British Forces and joined Captain James Bledsoe in fighting against them on July 9th but unfortunately he was killed as a result of wounds received during that battle (see Battle of LakeCharles). After Captain Lewis Armistead died his name became known as “Armistead’s Defense Line” after him (see History Of Louisiana - War effort - Andrew Henry Armistead). It should be noted that some people believe that Colonel David Dixon who commanded Fort Stedman during the American Revolution may have been responsible for taking up arms against the British Forces in order to help liberate his home state from Great Britain (see David Dixon - History)). It should also be noted that since Governor Neilson renamed Orleans Parish after Jefferson Davis there may be some connection between Colonel David Dixon and then-Governor Neilson although no confirmation exists yet).
New Iberia is a town in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It has been a center for cotton and other agricultural production since before the arrival of Europeans. The first European to settle in what is now New Iberia was Jean Lafitte, who built his trading post on what is now known as Bank Street in 1794. In 1803, Ulysses S. Grant granted land to James Wilkinson and others forts along the river to protect against British attack during their war with France. This grant formed part ofparamount importance during that period because it allowed access to profitable shipping lanes across the river for American traders. In 1814 French General René Larocque captured Baton Rouge from American forces under Andrew Jackson and moved his army southward towards New Orleans. On July 8,1814 he laid siege to Fort Stedman near present-day Baton Rouge and by September had driven Jackson out of Louisiana Territory (present day Texas). Aftermath of this event saw many Scots-Irish immigrants arrive in Louisiana looking for new opportunities and established themselves among local farmers and merchants including John Ladd who founded Lafayette Parish in 1821; David Lamar erected one of the first steamboats on the Great Lakes in 1824; George Cathey became an early settler here; Timothy McGee opened a small grocery store near downtown in 1830; Jellico Hodge founded Crescent City about 12 miles upstream from New Iberia; lumbering became an important industry hereabouts beginning around 1850 when timber prices were high enough to justify such investment despite lack of infrastructure or processing capabilities adjacent to existing logging communities like Covington & Clearwater

As per 2010 census figures 1% of the population were under 5 years old and 0% were over 65 years old; both percentages decreased from 2006 when they stood at 7%. The African American population numbered 404 (1%) while Latinos constituted 6% of all residents according to that year's estimates
