New Iberia is a city located in the Baton Rouge area of Louisiana. The population was 122,839 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in eastern Louisiana and second-largest in the state after New Orleans. The city has a rich history dating back to French exploration and colonization, including its first permanent European settlement in 1682 by Jacques Cartier. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson founded New Iberia as an agricultural community on the east bank of the Mississippi River, adjacent to present-day Baton Rouge. By 1830, Iberia had become one of the largest cotton plantations in Louisiana. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops stationed at Monroe Barracks near present-day New Iberia. Confederate general Robert E Lee ordered his brigade under General John Crain to march through town and attack Union troops deployed at Milliken's Bend plantation northeast of town. Approximately 100 men from Crain's brigade killed or wounded more than 450 Union soldiers before withdrawing into woods beyond town limits without attacking again. This event is generally considered to be one of the bloodiest clashes between Confederate forces and Union troops on American soil during the Civil War era. During Reconstruction following Reconstructionist policies enacted by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, New Iberia became one of several black majority communities throughout Louisiana that were targets for white flight and violence following new laws designed to protect African Americans from discrimination and violence by white mobs Following passage of The Ku Klux Klan Act (1915) by Ulysses S Grant; this legislation legalized white supremacist paramilitary groups which engaged in terroristic activities against black civilians across America A total of 4 deaths were reported within 1 week following passage of this law: 2 black men shot dead outside their homes while walking home from dinner with friends; 1 black man shot dead by whites who mistook him for a KKK member; and 1 white woman killed when her car was bombed while driving through a predominantly black neighborhood near downtown New Iberia

In 1814 Napoleon Bonaparte led an army through Alabama into Mississippi Territory to invade America following his successful campaign that year against British forces at Yorktown Heights in Virginia. Upon learning of Napoleon's invasion he sent General David Alaurentin westward along the Mississippi River to meet him at Kaskaski Bayou on November 8th despite being vastly outnumbered by Bonaparte's forces arrayed along the banks of the river opposite La Salle Island which served as rear guard for Bonaparte's columns crossing the bayou before reaching Kaskaski Bayou On December 12th General Alaurentin discovered that Bonaparte had crossed back over the river into Missouri just upstream of where he had left him two days earlier On January 6th 1800 Captain Jean Lafitte putatively landed a group of 300 men on an uninhabited island near present day Lafayette, LA but no evidence exists to support this claim Captain Lafitte abandoned his landing party unassisted minutes later when they came under fire from friendly Indian natives who were raiding nearby plantations A storm hit coastal Louisiana on February 2nd 1800 killing twelve people and causing extensive damage including widespread flooding which caused billions dollars worthOf damage to homes and businesses The town began rebuilding soon after with aid from France while other parts of America slowly recovered from War 1 As early as 1835 Governor Claiborne offered land east side Lake Pontchartrain for settlement although it never happened because Great Britain acquired Orleans Parish east side Lake Pontchartrain during their war with France Renowned architect James Pogue designed many new homes in what is now New Iberia including one called "The Queen" located near present day University Street which still stands today
