New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town in southeastern Louisiana. It was established in 1836 and has been the seat of government for the parish since 1857. The population was 21,851 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is a diverse community with French-speaking residents, English speakers, and Spanish-speaking residents. The history of New Iberia can be traced back to 1836 when General James K. Polk arrived in Baton Rouge on his way to become president of the United States. He ordered General Taylor to move his army to New Orleans so that he could assess what had happened in Texas during the Mexican–American War and find ways to help President Santa Anna win reelection against Andrew Johnson. General Taylor complied and moved his army into what is now eastern Livingston Parish. In 1837, two years after Polk's visit, John Ponce de León founded San Miguel de Allende near what is now downtown New Iberia. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces occupying Baton Rouge while General Beauregard was marching through Louisiana on his way from Corinth to Memphis with an Invasion force led by Major-General Alfred Mouton. A battle occurred at Carthage Plantation near where present day Old Hammond Street meets US 61 (Old US 11), which resulted in three dead Union soldiers and many wounded Confederate troops retreating southward across Interstate 10 towards Lafayette before being intercepted by Union cavalryman under Lieutenant Colonel James Hogg who killed all but one of them before they could cross into northern Mississippi Territory occupied by Confederates only weeks earlier In 1865, following Vicksburg's fall and Reconstruction's implementation in southern Louisiana following the American Civil War, New Iberia became part of Jefferson Parish as per Reconstruction legislation passed by Congress following the war During Hurricane Katrina on August 29th 2005, much damage was done within this small town due mainly to flooding caused by high winds entering through levees along US 61/I-10 interchange just north of town limits. Losses amounting to almost $100 million were reported within southeast Louisiana alone as a result of Katrina! Overall it would be conservatively estimated that over 1/3rds (approximately $27 million) or more (~$60 million) total damage occurred within municipality limits during Katrina alone - making it one of deadliest natural disasters ever recorded in America!
