New Iberia, Louisiana is home to a rich firearm history. The city was founded in 1810 by the French and Spanish colonists as Fort Natchitoches. It was renamed New Orleans in 1815 after Napoleon’s army moved north from Spain. A large arsenal and rifle range were built here and it became an important military post during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1864, the Union Army burned down New Orleans’ Arsenal, which left the city with few firearms. However, New Iberia did not go away altogether. Rifle ranges were still built here in the 1870s and 1880s; however, these days they are largely used for target shooting or pleasure hunting. The old arsenal building still stands today and is used as a museum of firearms history. In addition to its historical importance, New Iberia also has some beautiful buildings that date back to this period of American history. One such building is the Old Capitol Building which is located on Royal Street North near Broadway Avenue. This brick structure dates back to 1821 and is one of America’s earliest state capitols!

The first firearms hat was made in 1847 by George Stephenson. The first documented use of a firearm hat was on July 5, 1848, when a group of men wearing Hats and Shirts to Protection from the Sun set up camp at what is now known as Frenchman's Bend on the River Iberia.
New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Orleans-Lafayette. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Jefferson Parish metropolitan area. The New Iberia area has been inhabited for over 2,000 years and has experienced many different cultures and religions. The first inhabitants of this area were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present day New Iberia. In 1802, French colonists arrived in what is now New Iberia from Quebec with the intent to found a new colony on the Mississippi River. They named their new settlement after Pierre Morel de la Reynière, an officer in King Louis XV's army who had served in China and India. The colonists built a fortuitous location on a bend in the river where they could watch as game ran wild and plentiful crops were grown. During the American Revolution, New Iberia became an important military post because it was within easy driving distance of Baton Rouge. French Canadian troops garrisoned here helped stop British forces from entering Louisiana during that conflict. After independence was declared, some of these soldiers returned to their native country while others took up arms against America. Many of these veterans settled down in what is now downtown New Iberia which became known as "The Old Town." In 1797, members of the First Baptist Church (later known as Emmanuel Baptist) founded what would become one of LSU's most iconic landmarks: La Salle University Preparatory School (now UL Lafayette). La Salle developed into one of LSU's most successful schools with its rigorous academic program and renowned football team which won national championships three times between 1906-1914.). A group led by Rev Denton Casey purchased land eastward along US 1 from Masons for $1 million dollars in 1907 which would eventually become Old Bridge Road/University Drive today (). In 1821, Claiborne Villere donated land contiguous with his plantation southeast of modern day Hurricane Katrina damage to be used as a future community called Prairie du Chien (Prairie du Chien Township). This donation formed the nucleus around which later developers built homes throughout downtown New Iberia including Haughton-Ballard Homes Company (), Ballard Homes ()(), etc.) In 1892 William Gaudette donated 5 acres northward along US 50 South to be used as open space for public education (). This property would later become home to Lafitte High School (). In 1927 Dr J F Hiller Foundation created Lake Providence Forest Preserve (), also known as Hiller Park (). This tract included portions or both current blocks southwesterly side Halls Avenue / Steely Drive () and eastwesterly side Main Street ()) . As this parcel grew more wooded it was renamed Laurelwood forest Preserve (); however no such designation ever appeared on maps until after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much or allof it on September 29th 2004 ). Ulysses S Grant visited this area when he made his way through southeastern Louisiana during his 1879 journey across America via train trip organized by Senator John C Pemberton (). He stopped at Houma en route to Mobile before continuing on through Alabama()and Tennessee()to reach Memphis(). There he met General Sherman ()and asked him how he thought things were going westward due to recent news reports about hostile Indians living among white people ({Ulysses S Grant Diary 6 October 1879}) The visit helped further develop relationships between President Ulysses S Grant's administration and General Sherman that lasted until 1865 when Sherman moved out of East Tennessee towards Oklahoma Territory When General George Armstrong Custer attacked Bessie atop Mount Rushmore National Monument during his Dakota War Campaigns on November 25th 1890 (), Union Army Colonel John Gibbons rode out into Indian Country wearing civilian clothes () approximately four miles northwest ofpresent day James Fournier Boulevard/Old National Highway 95) riding horseback toward Bessie Top ↑ instead attacking directly upon outpost surrounded by tipis controlled by Sioux warriors

New Iberia is located in the Easy going area of northeastern Louisiana. The community began as a small farming village founded by Englishmen in 1818. By 1840, it had become a town and was named for Iberia River. In 1849, New Iberia became the county seat of Jefferson County and remained so until the creation of Rapides Parish in 1872. The early history of New Iberia can be traced back to 1818 when some Englishmen settled near present day New Iberia on the banks of the Isis River. They named their new settlement after one of their native countries- Spain- which they saw as a land with great potential for agriculture and development. These pioneers were followed by other settlers over time and by 1860, there were more than 350 people living in New Iberia. This growth continued through the years with many new buildings being erected including a courthouse, schoolhouse, hospital, and post office. During Reconstruction period (1868-1920), New Iberia experienced increased prosperity due to its location within easy commuting distance of Baton Rouge and its access to both rural markets and urban centers such as Baton Rouge and Lafayette. However, during this time period white flight from black neighborhoods took place which eventually led to demise of most African American businesses along with loss of jobs for locals as well as mass migration out into non-black areas throughout Louisiana plains region during this time frame. In recent decades however, growth has resumed in downtown New Ibergua with new construction projects continuing apace including an expanded library system that opened in 2012; addition of several restaurants/cafes; and completion of several streetscape renovations including installation of streetlights at various intersections throughout the city center which will improve visibility while also adding aesthetic value to the area. 2 According to the 2010 U .S . Census data, there are now over 1157 residents living in DowntownNewIbergua making it oneoftheintensely populatedandsandwichedwesternLouisianatowns.(1) Despite these positive developments however,, gentrificationofDowntownNewIberguahasnot stoppedandrisksof gentrificationoustoresultinlossofthespontaneouscharacteristicsthathavemadethiscommunitysoidentifiableandattractiveto relocatedworkersandsurroundingneighborsoverthelastdecadesalfromoutsideofthestreetopsportsbarsndnightlife
New Iberia was founded in 1837 by the Spanish as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to shipping and farming. By 1881, New Iberia had a population of over 40,000 people. It became an important transportation hub for goods moving across the river and into central Louisiana. In 1916, New Iberia was incorporated as a city.
