New Iberia, Louisiana is a small town located in the Parish of Thibodaux, in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 917 at the 2000 census and 1,052 at the 2010 census. New Iberia is located on Lake Pontchartrain and forms part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in New Iberia was established on October 25, 1868. The name for the town was changed to New Orleans on April 20, 1870 due to its location within New Orleans City limits. The original land grant for what is now New Iberia was given by Governor John Sibley to Louis Trimble in 1802. TheTrimble family had come from Scotland and were supporters of James Kenedy's unsuccessful candidacy for president in 1804. In 1890, Jules Ferry donated land north of where present-day Lafayette Avenue meets Canal Street to build a new city park which would be called after him - Jules Ferry Park. The donation included 4 acres (1 km²) of swampy land east of current Canal Street between Elysian Fields Road and Carondelet Road which became known as Trimble Park after the owner of that lot donated it to the city government free of charge. The town dates back to 1763 when General Robert Rogers selected this site as his headquarters during his march against Father Antoine de La Salle's Army Of Louisiana during their annual campaign along the Mississippi River Valley. A company store and post office were built here about 1800 by Captain Ebenezer Sprague under direction of Brigadier General Edward Braddock who had invaded Mobile Bayou region from Canada four months earlier with intentions of establishing an American presence downriver before reaching Texas via Mobile Bayou crossing overland rather than throughNative American trailsBLANK PAGE
New Iberia was founded in 1824 by General Andrew Jackson as a trading post on the Red River. The town became an important center for cotton production and commerce, and its citizens were known for their hospitality. New Iberia's economy declined during the Great Depression, but it regained some of its former glory in the 1940s when it became a major center for defense manufacturing.
